Must-own PS3 games

Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom   : A sweeping role-playing game that was apparently modeled after the Final Fantasy franchise, this epic adventure boasts stunning visuals and a groundbreaking battle system. Newcomers may find it difficult to learn.

Resistance: Fall of Man   : It's nearly unanimous among game critics -- this shooter is the best PS3 launch title and also a contender for game of the year. Set in a bleak 1950s alternate history in which mankind was annihilated by a mysterious menace, it's up to you to grab a gun and save what's left of civilization.

Genji: Days of the Blade   : A samurai fable that pays tribute to Sony's Japanese heritage, this one is all about swordplay and frenetic action. This is an excellent choice for gamers who are just getting started -- button mashing is pretty much all it takes to rage on to victory.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07   : Tee it up as Tiger or one of his rivals on some breathtakingly rendered links. Genuine courses, swings and clubs are provided, and you can take your game online to battle friends and strangers. This version stands up well to its Xbox 360 counterpart.

NBA 2K7   : For the past several years, no basketball franchise has been able to box out the 2K series for the title of basketball champ. The graphical detail is tremendous, and the gameplay doesn't lose a dribble in translation. This is probably the greatest basketball game in existence.

Madden NFL 07   : Gamers speak of the "Madden Curse," which somehow causes the game's cover star to be injured each year. One aspect of the game the curse can't touch is the pure fun of piling on touchdowns against your smack-talking roommate.

Mobile Suit Gundam: Crossfire   : Giant robots! Need we say more? Reviewers have been unkind to the latest Gundam offering, but the series has its hardcore following, and a few minutes with the game reveals why. Gundam is all about dumb action and cool looks.

Ridge Racer 7   : Thanks to an awkward speech by a Sony executive at a gaming convention, "Riiiiiidge Racer!" has become a catch-phrase of mockery among gamers. The game itself is no joke, fueled with fast-paced rides and neck-breaking courses.

NBA 07   : Although Sony's own NBA offering fails to stack up with rival 2K7, there's something to be said for NBA 07's playcalling system and free-throw shooting mechanics. If you're a hoops nut, you'll want to own both games.

Call of Duty 3   : World War II ended long ago, but that doesn't stop its battles from being played out in neverending fashion by adrenaline-juiced gamers worldwide. This game puts you on the front lines of the action as you help drive the Nazi menace out of France.

Tony Hawk's Project 8   : The coolest new feature in the latest Tony Hawk entry is a stop-motion, time-slowing feature called "Nail the Trick," which lets you experience life awith the reaction speed of the Birdman and pull off crowd-wowing ollies, manuals and rail grinds.

Need for Speed Carbon   : Contending stiffly with Ridge Racer 7 for the title of slickest racing game out for the PS3, this street racer packs the vibe of the film  "The Fast and the Furious." You feel like an outlaw as you evade the cops, punk opponents for pink slips and impress the sexy girl who stars in the game's cut scenes.

Blazing Angels: Squadrons of WWII   : Few games maximize the graphical potential of new generation hardware like "Blazing Angels," which rocked the Xbox 360 release and now does the same for the PS3. You take to the skies in virtually photorealistic warscapes for dogfighting mayhem.

Rainbow Six Vegas   : Here is a game Trent and Mikey from "Swingers" could dig. Vegas, baby,  is under terrorist attack, and you and your Rainbow Six squad must keep things safe for all the strippers, elopers and bachelor partiers. If you'r familiar with the city, you'll recognize stunning recreations of Las Vegas' streets, walkways and casinos.

Wario Ware: Touched!
