Football Goal Posts
It doesn't have to be football season to prepare for the sport. The grass or turf needs to be seeded, watered, or cleaned while goal posts should be padded and painted. However, there comes a time in every football field's life when a goal post has to be replaced. This might be problematic if you don't know anything about goal posts, and let's face it, most people don't. Don't worry. With a little help, the new college, high school, or pee wee goal post will be up in no time.
Down The Middle
You may not be able to count on your favorite team to win the Super Bowl or your high school alma mater to reach the state playoffs, but at least the their field's goal post will be around for decades to come. Football goal posts are made from either heavy gauge steel, galvanized pipes, or aluminum and must follow certain requirements, depending on the level of play. Posts range between four to five inches thick, features a 90-degree gooseneck, crossbars, and uprights.
* A high school goal post's height may fall between 10 feet and 23 feet, which makes larger than posts used in professional and collegiate games. Many of these posts also double as soccer goals.
* Professional and collegiate goal posts range from 10 feet to 18 feet in height while the length of vertical posts must be 30 feet. These goal posts are built to withstand the elements.
* Although they're uncommon, folding goal posts do exist! A hand crank may be used to hoist or lower the post, which has aluminum crossbars and uprights.
Goal Post Safety
Whether the football goal post is made from aluminum or steel, or whether it's stationary, folding, or has expandable cross crossbars, they pose a risk to players and even fans.
* '''Goal Post Padding''': Believe it or not, but it's extremely easy to run into a post's gooseneck. Post pads are roughly six feet tall with a five-inch or more pad thickness. They wrap around the post and lock on with the help of Velcro.
* '''Ball Stop Net''': Keep fans in the stands from getting hit with the pigskin with a net. They attach to the pole's back and catches the ball when it's kicked through the posts.
* '''Wind Direction Flags''': These orange or red strips are hooked onto the top of each vertical post and will indicate which direction the winds blows. This aids not only with plays, but will also let those on the sideline know where the ball will land.
