Nowadays, the Internet has for the most part taken the role of the encyclopedia (a comprehensive set of information on any subject) and to some extent the dictionary (generally a collection of words with their corresponding definitions in one or many languages arranged in a systematic order.) Encyclopedias and dictionaries in 'paper book form' is pretty much an extinct human product, but they have been reincarnated in digital forms that makes them much more organized, portable, and accessible than the Internet.

Bilingual dictionaries are great when you learning a new language.  * Monolingual dictionary are useful when you are brushing up on your own language. * Etymological dictionaries are used by those are are interested in the historical linguistic change of a word. * Crossword dictionaries can really help you out on a hard puzzle. * Rhyming Dictionaries can make you life easier when you are trying to drum up a poem ora jingle. * The thesaurus can help spice up your speech or writing style if you are tired of using the same word 50 times every day. * And if you are interested in jsut a set subject specific words, a glossary would be your best aid.
