Women's Fall Style Guide

Changing leaves, football games, and crisp autumn days are close at hand.  By now you may have tackled your Back-to-School shopping for the kids, and are ready to take on your own wardrobe. Before shopping, why not throw out some of your old clothes to make room for the new ones? This will also help you to figure out what items you need for the cooler season. Figure out your budget and then read our guide to get information on the latest trends and the hottest fashions.

Fall 2010 Style

These looks are all hot for the fall season. Consider, color, style, and detail, and read up on the latest looks!

Military Fashion

Even though the soldier-inspired style made its debut in 2008, it continues into this fall with a few twists. It's subtler and puts a damper on the uniform's pomp.

The Fifties

In the fashion world, they like to say "the lady is back." Bring out your hourglass shape and don't be shy with that cleavage. We've got the classic combo to make you look elegant and the most feminine you've ever looked for the fall season:

Monochrome

This fall matching all your outfits into a single color is the way to go. Whether it's all red, blue, or brown, you should be clad in the same color, tone, or pattern.

Heeled Socks

Socks and flat sandals? Not so stylish. Ankle socks or scrunched-down trouser socks with your favorite heeled sandal or lace-up bootie? Quite the show!

Leather

Leather is a fall classic...actually, it's pretty much an every season classic. You can never go wrong with a stylish, leather jacket. It's a key item for your closet, so if you're way behind, it's time to actually get one. Or, you might just be looking for an upgrade/indulge in more leather, so check out the following:

Fur

Fur is an essential for this Fall 2010. Fur anything, I mean anything (real and faux). Even if its just trim, make sure you've got something furry in your closet (not including your hiding cat).

Velvet

Sporting velvet (NOT velour. Yes, there is a difference) can be a little tricky. You might end up loving the revival or hating it. Just remember to check your velvet's quality and opt for  the richest colors possible, such as burgundy, maroon, dark greens, and so on.

Sheer

Mix your sheer clothing with other key looks that are in style this season. It's getting colder though, so don't only wear transparent fabrics. Keep it subtle and remember that this look likes lace:

Knitwear

Make sure you keep yourself warm this fall by wearing a lot of knits. Wrap yourself up with layers and layers:

Coats and Tops

Just because the temperature drops in the fall doesn't mean a person still can't look good. Check out these warm, comfortable coats and bundle up in style.

Camel Coat

The camel coat is the great pre-winter coat. It is a great layering piece, so make sure to get one you'll wear all season.

(Neo) Double-Breasted Jacket

These take simplicity to a whole new level. Usually low-cut with only two buttons, this type of jacket is great when worn with entire double-breasted suits. Try double-breasted blazers or waistcoats.

Capes

A cape is another fall 2010 essential. These are great for keeping warm and staying stylish. Get some ideas on how to wear it below.

Buttoned-Up Collar

Remember when your mother used to button your collar all the way up and you thought, "How uncomfortable, how nerdy"? Well, Mommy's always right and looky here. The 'all-the-way-buttoned' collar is back in, so make sure you follow up.

Bottoms

Harper's Bazaar calls it "Conservative Glamour," so put away those minis and clean up the grunge. You want to be hearing "You clean up well" all fall.

Ankle-Length Skirts

Make sure any skirt that you plan to wear this fall is so long you can't see your shoes. Okay, you don't need to go that long, but keep in mind that any skirts that go above your calves might not make the greatest impression.

Classy Boot-Cut Pant

The skinny is not exactly a favorite this fall. In fact, it's left its place to the classy boot-cut pant. No, not its hippie jean relative. Take a closer look.

Nice Stems!

Every season, you can be sure that a new crop of footwear is going to make its way into stores. Remember, when picking out your shoes, walk around in them for a bit first inside the store. Although high heels may never be quite as comfortable as you'd like, you still want to make sure you can manage yourself in them.

Over-the-Knee Boots

The higher, the better! You could stop at over your knee or you go all the way and get some thigh-high boots. You can wear these over skinny jeans or tights paired with a skirt or sweater dress. See how long you can make your legs look.

Furry Boots

The furry boots trend is an expansion of this fall's fur fever. Like I said before, you'll be seeing furry everything, so make sure to make your feet look cute with one of these:

Spotlight On: Ugg Boots

You could say Uggs are old-school furry boots. And though they're not the hottest item to wear out this season, they still win the prize for most comfy slippers. So if you still don't have a pair, you might want to get one.

Accessories

Now that you've put your new fall outfits together, here's one last thing to think about--accessories! Chances are if you save your jewelry and handbags from a few seasons ago, they will come back in style, so it pays to hold onto things! See what's in style this fall.

Knee-High Socks

Since over-the-knee boots are in this season, you might want to bring even more attention to your legs by wearing these kind of socks under your boots. Or, if you don't feel like sporting the sexy boots every single day, you can give the same effect with knee-high socks.

Layered Rings

When it comes to jewelry this fall, rings are definitely your key item. Wearing 2-3 rings on both hands will be common, but don't go for all that bling bling. Try subtler gems like amber, turquoise, or onyx. You can also stack rings on top of each other if you're into wearing simple bands .

Long-Strap Straight Pocketbook

This is your go-to purse for the fall. Its shape is often rectangular, but you might want to loosen up its geometric stiffness with some funky alligator skin or exotic colors.

Long Gloves

Gloves are definitely still a go, and you might want to try your hand at the long ones.
