Water Sports

Summer fun can be whatever you make it. There are those of us who are thrilled by the idea of a towel, sunglasses, an economy sized bottle of SPF 45, and a Nora Roberts novel. For anyone who gets tired of laying around all day, watching the surf pull in unsuspecting sand castles, here are some activities that are sure to be a major hit. Some do require a little practice, but who knows, maybe part of the fun will be falling off and getting back on again.

Whether you're at the beach, a lake, your town pool, or the local pond, put on your swim suit and get ready to try some of these thrilling water sports and games!

Kayaking

Kayaking is a fun and exciting activity for people of all ages (and it's a great work out too). Make sure you're Kayaking at a level that is safe for you though. Ocean and river kayaking can be very challenging while lake or pond kayaking is more suitable for less experienced people.

Jet Skiing

Talk about exciting: jet skiing is a thrilling and exhilarating way to spice up a day at the beach or the lake. It can be fairly dangerous though, so make sure to get the full range of instructions before riding out on those speedy water machines.

Scuba Diving and Snorkeling

Although you'll probably need to be in an ocean to enjoy these activities to their fullest, they both provide an eye opening view to the world of the ocean that we rarely ski. It may ultimately be more gratifying, but you'll normally need an instructor to go scuba diving. So if you're looking for something a little more casual, try snorkeling!

Surfing and Bodyboarding

If you don't already know how, learning to surf could be a very gratifying way to spend your days this summer and if you aren't up for the challenge, try body boarding. It's an activity suitable for all ages and still allows yourto have lots of fun in the ocean waves.

Swimming

This classic water activity is perfect for the whole family, is accessible to almost everyone, and is a great way to cool off and have fun in the hot summer months. Playing games in the pool or swimming laps can keep you in shape while you're having a great time in the water.

Windsurfing and Kiteboarding

Harness the wind and let it empower you to have a thrilling experience on a wind surfer or a kite board. If you're looking for a more controlled experience, try windsurfing (it is a lot like sailing and is easy to control) but if you're looking for a thrill let a kite pull you along the surface of the water or wherever else the wind wants to take you.

Waterskiing and Wakeboarding

If you have access to a power boat, this is a fun and athletic way to have fun out on the water. Be careful though, waterskiing and wakeboarding can be dangerous so get a few practice runs under your belt before you do anything to crazy.

Safety Tips for Water Sports

  • Always wear a lifejacket, especially when in dangerous waters, or if you are a child or an inexperienced swimmer.
  • Learn CPR and First Aid. It may seems unnecessary, but if it does come in handy one day, it could mean the difference between life and death.
  • Learn to swim. Ask a friend to teach you, practice in a local pool with a lifeguard, or take classes. You shouldn't really be anywhere near the water if you can't swim.
  • Don't dive anywhere unless you are absolutely sure that it is safe. Never dive without anyone watching. Water should be at least 16 feet deep in order to safely dive in, but the higher up you are diving from, the deeper the water will need to be.
  • Don't do any water sport by yourself unless a lifeguard is present.
  • Don't do activities that are beyond your skill level.
  • Wear sunblock. It protects against skin cancer, and you'll look much younger in the long run.
  • Familiarize yourself with the animals in the area. Never touch a sea animal unless you are absolutely positive it is completely harmless. Don't remove sea animals from the water or sand, as this could harm or kill them.
  • Be careful when entering or exiting a boat. Have a buddy hold the boat steady. Enter and exit the boat one at a time.
