Sun Lamps

Having a healthy tan complexion is not only a summer fad anymore, and sun lamps  can maintain a tan all year long. Sounds amazing, right?

WRONG! According to the FDA, sun lamps are just as bad as tanning beds which are just as harmful as the sun's own UV rays. True, they emit mostly UVA rays instead of UVB rays, but that does not make them any less harmful to your skin's health. They can cause malignant cancer, immune system damage, premature aging of the skin, wrinkles, and other unsightly skin blemishes. If you insist on using these devices, do so at your own risk.

Perhaps you have been prescribed a sun lamp for medical reasons. Supposedly, sun lamps are used as treatment for skin illnesses such as psoriasis, vitiligo, eczema, and acne. However, always discuss the options with your doctor first.

  • Acne specific blue/red sun lamps are a better choice if acne treatment is the sole reason for purchasing a sun lamp.
  • For SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) please see the Light Box Buying Guide.

When purchasing a sun lamp...

  • Make sure the UVA output isn't much higher than the natural light (if it is too high, the light can damage skin).
  • Many lamps come with protective eye wear, which must always been worn in front of a sun lamp.
  • A tripod, which allows you to position the lamp for optimum tanning, can be purchased as an attachment for most sun lamps.
