Rugby
Even though it's not a popular sport in the United States, there are rugby leagues on a collegiate and professional level throughout the country. If you're wondering what rugby is, it's a team sport where competitors basically kick, run, and pass an oval-shaped ball to score points. However, the sport is split into two sections: rugby union, which is played in the UK and Europe, and the Australian/New Zeland contest known as rugby league. Each division plays under different rules, but use the same gear.
Rugby Gear
Unlike football players who are heavily padded and protected during a game, rugby players require less gear despite the sport's highcontact nature. If you are planning to play rugby, there a few important pieces of equipment that you will need to strap on before you take the field.
* '''Scrum Cap:''' These caps are soft helmets with slight padding. They protect the head and ears from friction and may reduce the impact of hits. The cap's cushioning must match the International Rugby Board's (IRB) regulations - they can't be thicker than one centimeter. The only difference in caps will be the design rather than the amount of padding.
* '''Shoulder Pads:''' Rugby shoulder pads are not the strapshirts and come in different sizes and styles. Short shoulder pads cover the collarbone and shoulder, but are still breathable. Longer pads extend protection to the torso and upper arms. They do, however, retain heat. Just like scrum caps shoulder pads must also meet the IRB's standards. Uncompressed pads must be one centimeter thick.
* '''Mouth Guard:''' Mouthpieces are required field gear during a game, and protect players' teeth, tongues, and gums. They're usually plastic and can be custom made or store bought. To get the perfect fit, it's suggested that you place the mouth guard in hot water and wait for it to soften. Then, fit it over your teeth and bite down. The cooling plastic will form an impression around your teeth.
Lace Up
Shoes are extremely important during a rugby game or practice. They're also the most expensive piece of apparel. Rugby shoes allow players to control the ball with good traction and comfort. There are different types of rugby shoes depending on the player's skill level, the field, and weather. Molded shoes are used on hard turf, feature nonin cleats, which have replaceable cleat studs.
