Sex and the City

If you knew me, you would probably think I'm the least qualified person to write this guide. I'm not fashionable, I hate wearing high heels, I can't afford expensive designer clothes, I would never get let into a trendy club, and I can count on one hand the number of serious relationships I've had. The only thing I do have in common with these gals is that I enjoy a good Cosmo. Despite our differences, for whatever strange and twisted reason, I absolutely adore Sex and the City.
Let's Talk About Sex
If the topic of sex over Sunday brunch makes you cringe and long for the days when people still used the term "heavy petting," then, as a general rule, HBO will not be your cup of tea. While the core of the show is about four friends seeking love and happiness with the right man in fabulous New York City, the exterior is laced, wait make that doused, with sex. Be prepared to see the two B's butts and breasts, as well as hear plenty of moaning (unless you're watching the reruns on cable stations). Yes, like I said, this is not for the faint of heart, and yet it is the very reason why so many thoroughly enjoy it. Can SATC be shallow at times? Yes, but it's one of the few programs not afraid to talk about sex and relationships from a woman's perspective.
Even if women may not necessarily relate to the glamorous lifestyle that goes on in the Upper West Side, it's easy to identify with the characters and the issues that they face. Sex and the City discussed sexual problems that others dared not touch with a 10 foot pole: can you form a stable relationship with your friendgay? Your partner has just expressed his interest for something adventurous in the bedroom and you don't know whether to be repulsed or intrigued. These scenarios are just the tip of the iceberg. The show was a sexual safe haven, a place where four friends met to be honest and supportive.
Meeting the Girls
* '''Carrie Bradshaw''' writes a sex column that focuses on relationships and dating. Her inspiration not only comes from her own experiences, but from those of her three closest friends, Samantha, Miranda, and Charlotte. She has what I like to think of as an unhealthy obsession with shoes, yet a fairly normal love of fashion. Carrie says "I'm looking for love. Real love. Ridiculous, inconvenient, consuming, can'tother love." Although she eventually finds it with a man, she realizes her friends were providing that sort of loyalty and support all along.
* '''Samantha Jones''' is a strong confident woman who works for a PR agency. She is, without a doubt, the most sexual woman of the group, and has no qualms about openly discussing her encounters over breakfast. She considers herself a "try-sexual," meaning she'll try anything once, and it's safe to say she has. Although she's not searching for monogamy, she has had a handful of serious relationships. Underneath her tough exterior, she is kind, sensitive, and 100% loyal to her friends.
* '''Charlotte York''' is the most conservative and most conventional one of the group"I've been dating since I was 13! Where is he already?!"
* '''Miranda Hobbes''' is the exact definition of a Type A personalityshe is a workaholic and a successful lawyer. She has a more masculine approach to love and dating and is the most cynical. She never pictured herself as a mother, but when she becomes pregnant in Season Four, she finds her son, Brady, changes her life. The growth of her character throughout the series feels honest and real: she is the modern woman trying to balance it all.
