Scene Kids

Being a scene kid is kind of like being in Fight Club: the first rule of being a scene kid is that you don't talk about being a scene kid. Discussing the killer Paramour show you saw last weekend is okay; talking about the three hours you later spent bleaching and dying your hair out to match the lead singer's is not, unless you make a video tutorial of said dying process and post it on YouTube. Standing in front of the mirror perfecting the wax-to-hair ratio for that effortlessly messy look is fine, just don't let anyone know about it.

Getting Involved

  • First and foremost, go to shows. Lots of them. LMFAO and Brokencyde are two hugely popular scene bands, but don't be afraid to step outside your comfort zone and flirt with happy hardcore, emo and indie dance too. Seeing and being seen is what drives this movement, so round up your friends the next time Rise Against comes to town.
  • Self-expression and individual identity are a big part of this trend. Piercings and tattoos are a huge conversation starter and should reflect your personal interests. Just be mindful that the Monroe piercing you think is so awesome today may not be so great five years from now. Same thing for tattoos; that killer hello Kitty wrist ink may hinder your professional job search later on in life. Hair is fair game since it grows out so fast. Experiment with asymmetrical cuts, choppy bangs and accessories like headbands and bows.

Step 1: The Clothes

Who needs to look like they can breathe? Skinny jeans  have proven themselves to be not just a fad but a way of life. Pair with a t-shirt of a band no one's ever heard of and you're set.

Plaid: it's not just for lumberjacks anymore. It doesn't matter if it's a buttondown you swiped from Grandpa's closet or a vintage shop find; plaid  is the new black.

There's really nothing quite like a super-soft over-sized hoodie to snuggle into on a chilly fall day. Whether it's striped, plain or emblazoned with your favorite band's logo, it just works.

T-shirts  can go one of two ways: they're either totally plain or reference a show/band/celebrity from way before you were born.

Step 2: The Accessories

When it comes to sneakers , high topped and colorful is the way to go. Don't worry if it clashes with your hoodie; nonchalance is the key to pulling this off.

Rubber bracelets  are the arm candy of choice; and don't skimp. The more the merrier.

Since you're already having trouble breathing in your skinny jeans you clearly don't need a belt . It's just for show, so wear it low on your hips.

Bandannas are the wild card: wear it however you want. Knotted around your ankle is good, as is a tiny corner hanging out of your back pocket. If you can squeeze it in there.

Step 3: Extras

We're back to the hair. Pomade  is essential for keeping your swoopy side bangs just that--to the side.

Music is what got you into the scene, right? Earbuds  block out noise so you won't miss a word of the new Pains of Being Pure at Heart song and won't ruin your hair.

Messenger and tote bags are great because they can carry everything from laptops to a weekend's worth of Dickie pants without making you look like you have a mountain on your back.
