Let go of your safety wardrobe and let your clothing --for once--change with the season . No one's taking away your favorite worn-in tee  or Saturday jeans , but consider a clothing upgrade for public appearances. The 2010 fashion trends  for men are versatile, comfortable , and easy. And let's be honest--even you don't think that shirt looks good. Suck it up, and channel your inner fashionisto.

On Top

Plaid shirts  have  become an essential piece in every guy's closet.  They look great at brunch, at the dog park, or paired with a blazer  for nighttime. And, their loose but structured fit and bold pattern  hide body parts you'd rather not highlight, like a gut that won't flatten or arms that won't tone. Choose a plaid shirt  that complements your personal style. Try a relaxed, slightly vintage shirt  with a classic pattern , or If you rock the retro  look, go for full-on vintage vibe.

Take a cue  from professors everywhere and don a cardigan .The streamlined sweater  works (almost) all year and looks great over (almost) anything--tucked in button-downs  or old band tee-shirts .

Throw away your favorite, faded hoodie sweatshirt , figuratively at least.  No longer just for lounging, sweatshirts  have taken on new sartorial significance. Look for a crisp sweatshirt in bright or mottled colors. Throw it on over a tailored shirt  for a smart, casual combination.

For Spring , a lightweight jacket  is a must. Modified military style jackets  and short cotton twill coats  are very now, but likely to stick around.

On Bottom

The big trouser trend for Spring  2010 is cuffed pants --jeans ,cords ,cotton twill pants , and anything else...except work slacks . Look for a slim cut , not necessarily skinny, that flatters your build. Beware of ill-fitting baggy jeans! If need be, treat your jeans like your work clothes and get them tailored! You're good to go with dark indigo  and medium  washes, or the newly trendy lighter , slightly-distressed  jeans.

Accessories: Sunglasses and Ties

Shoes
  • Trendy sneakers  add a playful touch to any look. Choose either a slightly tattered looking classic model, like Tretorns , for the prep school rebel look that commanded the runways. Or grab colorful, cool kicks with a retro  feel. It's all about channeling the guy you wanted to be back in the day.
  • Purchase reinvented boat shoes . Choose upgraded versions that are less "boat house hang" and more "bar opening night."
