This reality television show, filmed in the Real World style, which follows the lives of eight young cast members as they live and vacation in the Jersey Shore town of Seaside Heights, has enamored young peopl the world over. In exchange for living and partying in the shore house, each cast member is required to work shifts at a local board walk t-shirt store. Failure to comply with the ground rules set by their boss, who owns the shore house in which the cast resides, results in termination and eviction. Although great controversy has surrounded the shows use of slang and offensive words, like "Guido and Guidette" for example, throughout the first season audiences were intrigued and entertained by the characters' unique personalities and comical interactions. It's become an overwhelmingly popular guilty pleasure (the season finale was MTV's highest rated original series telecast in almost two years) arguably because of the shows captivating, dramatic and occasionally outlandish cast members.
The Cast
Drama infects (or maybe it blesses) each of the Jerey Shore cast members: Angelina "Jolie" Pivarnick, Jenni "JaWoww" Farley, Michael "The Situation" Sorrentino, Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi, Paul "DJ Pauly D" DelVecchio, Sammi "Sweetheart" Giancola, and Vinny Guadagnino. Self proclaimed guidos, guidettes, "sweet bitches," and "Mama's Boys," they all add their own unique personality to the Jersey Shore house, for better or worse. Despite local scrutinizing of the casts' controversial use of Italian slang words, similar to words like "spic" or "wop," and the show's negative portrayal of the area and its residents, Snooki and The Situation have caught our attention, and many of us just can't change the channel.
The Look
The casts' signature "Guido and Guidette" style has fueled public controversy but has also become a trademark for the show and its fans. "Wife beaters," muscle shirts, bright colored tube tops, expensive denim, track and velour jump suits are vital items in this casts' wardrobe but the same cannot necessarily be said for the entire Jersey Shore. Many Jersey residents feel that the style sported by these cast members contributes to the negative stereotype of many of New Jersey's full time inhabitants. The cast members however, don't seem to care much about stereotypes at all. Their obsession with fake tans, styled hair, bling, working out and clubbing only enhance their unique lifestyle and our viewing experience.
