Industrial Music
Let me tell you the story of my dark future.
My name is Joe-242. I am a unit for the Collective. My bed is a cold cryotank. The day's censored news is fed directly into my eyeballs. Spare bladders have been surgically inserted into my lungs filter the carcinogens out of my oxygen. This is not my life.
Before leaving for work, I ingest my focus and cognitive abilities pill, my symptom suppression pill and inject my anxiety medication. I wash myself in an antiseptic gel. I dress in black on black, steeldefense. The city streets are not safe. This is not my life.
I labor for three hours in the first daycycle, ingest nutrition paste midcycle, report to my Political Information Officer, then I labor for three more hours. During my shift, three of my coworkers are taken away. We'll never hear from them again. This is not my life.
Once first nightcycle begins, I slink away from my job and my apartment. If you know the surveillance grid of the city, you can move around undetected. I head toward my favorite illegal nightclub. My keyboard, my laptop and my neural-net interface are in a scan proof box under my arm. When I reach the venue, my audience is waiting for me. The smell of sweat, plastic, chemical accelerants and chrome fills the air. Units grind against each other and stomp their heavy boots on the ground. I wire up my system and jack in. Electricity surges through me. Every eye turns to me. I tell my stories of technology outpacing humanity, about the coldness of drone war, about screaming as our souls are devoured by the machine.
This is my life.

Dreams of a Cryotank
When people think about gothic dance club music, they're usually thinking about industrial music. Centered around darkly futuristic themes and sounding like a bunch of Germans losing a fight with a washing machine, industrial music is a fusion of European synthpop and gothic rock. Origins are debatable, but they generally center around the German band Kraftwerk.
I used to be an industrial DJ and I've comprised a little list of my favorite clubby dance tunes. This list is by no means comprehensive, but if you want to dip your toes into the fetid oil slick of industrial music, here are some good songs to try out. Also, if you want a crash course in how to dance industrial-style, check out
tank9's videos on youtube. Kid's got
moves. Here's the basics: think somewhere between fascist commando and malfunctioning robot.
* '''Front 242''' - ''Headhunter'': Probably the most remixed industrial song (and that's really saying something), Headhunter is probably the most industrial thing you'll ever hear short of sticking your head in a printing press.
* '''Skinny Puppy''' - ''Smothered Hope'': The grand dames of the industrial scene, Skinny Puppy has been around forever. They've got a sorta punky vibe to their music and sound like a bunch of pissed off drag queens yelling inside an auto assembly line.
* '''BiGod 20 '''- ''The Bog'': I know absolutely nothing about this band, but ''The Bog'' is probably the weirdest, greatest industrial song ever recorded.
* '''Wumpscut''' -''Is It You/Christ****'': A titan in the industrial scene, Wumpscut has much to define the look and sound of the genre. You will hear their music EVERY time you go to a gothic/industrial club.
* '''Apoptygma Berzerk''' -'' Eclypse/Unicorn'': Though they eventually transitioned into traditional techno music, Apop used to have a stranglehold on the industrial dance scene. While you're at it, check out ''Cambodia''.
* '''Funker Vogt''' - ''Maschine Zeit/Gunman'': Fierce German industrial that focuses on the inhumanity of cold modern warfare, Funker Vogt is one of the best bands I've ever seen live. They look like a Nazi recruitment poster, too.
* '''Wolfsheim''' infused music.
* '''Covenant '''- ''Dead Stars/Bullet'': My favorite industrial band, Covenant always produces good stuff. I've been going to gothic events for over ten years and I've NEVER been to a place where they didn't play ''Dead Stars'' at some point.
* '''VNV Nation''' - ''Darkangel/ Saviour (Vox)'': Another favorite, VNV Nation is great at soaring, melodramatic anthems of war and the collapse of empires. VNV Nation concerts are the best thing evaaaaaaaar!
* '''And One '''Covenant band, And One does both synthpop and industrial music. They can often be tremendously funny (listen to ''Evil Boys'' or ''Life Isn't Easy In Germany'') but they do grim totalitarianism well (''Men In Uniform'').
