Symphonic Metal

By User:Kristenmollica @timeAndDate(1274988867) Do you find that your metal music just isn't epic enough? Do you wish Metallica would do a collaboration with Beethoven? You are not alone. Symphonic metal is a sub-genre of heavy metal that combines gothic metal, power metal, and most importantly classical music. There is often female opera singers singing along with full fledged choirs. The genre typically has female lead singers, and for some odd reason, most of the bands are from Europe. Europeans really know their classical music.

Kickin' It With Beethoven

Despite my clever title, most symphonic metal bands actually arrange their own scores and don't always borrow from previous classical musicians. Now many bands today will throw in a few violins to their songs for some dramatic effect, but this is not symphonic metal. I'm talking about large choirs and full orchestras on every song, layered of course with plenty of metal riffs, guitar solos, and double bass drumming. You'll listen to one of these songs and think, "That was immensely epic. I wish ''my'' life was that epic."  Let's talk bands. Therion was one of the first symphonic metal bands and the most influential. Two of the most popular bands are currently Within Temptation and Nightwish. Both have female soprano lead singers and incorporate gothic elements into their music. If you're a fan of femaleSiberian but without that happy Christmas feel, then I must recommend Apocalyptica. Three classically trained cellists covering Metellica, Faith No More, and Pantera. Need I say more? I think not. Cradle of Filth will appease those who seek a little death metal and male vocals. Now I must make a brief mention of one of the most commercially successful bands, Evanescence, which Wikipedia and most critics don't even know how to musically define. Personally, I believe their music is more hard rock than metal. However, their classical influences are undeniable. Choirs and orchestras are heavily present and lead singer Amy Lee has noted Mozart as one of her biggest influences. So if you want something a little softer, but just as grand, give them a listen.
