Dog Days of Summer

You know it's here. The sun is still out on your commute from work to home, you see more convertibles than school buses, and long sleeved shirts migrate to the back of your closet. The dog days of summer are a joyous time, a break from teachers and homework, and lots of sun on the beach. This is your guide to everything summer, from sunscreen  to books  to read on the beach. Kick back and soak up some rays; the dog days are here.

Destination: Summer!

In order to get ready for your summer ahead, you need to figure out where you are going to end up. A few things to consider for wherever this summer may take you.

Beach It!

A few things to remember about  basking in sand and sun.

  • Sand and salt water can take a rough toll on your skin. Be sure to moisturize with hydrating lotion  and drink plenty of water!
  • Even if it's cloudy out, don't underestimate the power of the sun. Always be sure to put on sunscreen  even if you don't think you need it.
  • Looking for a way to economize this summer? Pack some light snacks and sandwiches to bring to the beach; you'll be glad to avoid vendors overcharging you for a hot dog.
  • If you need entertainment while you are soaking up rays, don't forget to bring your iPod or a book  for some diversion.
  • Don't forget your sunglasses Remember, even if your eyes are closed, the sun's rays can be damaging.

Hanging Out Poolside

A few tips before you dip your feet in the pool.

  • Chlorine can be super-damaging for your hair. Consider either putting your hair up or protecting it under a swimming cap  before going in the water. Also, if you've just colored your hair, take extra caution. Wetting your hair with tap water before jumping in the pool can help to protect it from absorbing pool chemicals.
  • Pools are great for exercise  since your movements are slowed down by the water and you are much less likely to injure yourself. This can be a cool way to shed some unwanted pounds!
  • Don't forget about your pool toys Rafts or noodles  can be great for lounging and relaxing while chilling out in the water.
  • If you own a pool, maintenance  is key. Check out this site for everything you need to know about pool chemistry and making your swim experience safe.

The Great Outdoors

Make your outdoor trip the best it can be.

  • If you decide to go hiking, remember to bring proper footwear. Sandals can be harmful to your feet if you fall or get scraped, so bring a good pair of hiking boots
  • For some of you, the first thing that comes to mind with the great outdoors is probably bugs. Bug spray  will definitely come in handy, especially if you are near a lake or you are hiking through tall grass. Also, don't forget to wear protective clothing to shield against ticks and other harmful creepy crawlies.
  • First aid kits are a good idea for longer outdoor adventures like camping trips
  • Going fishing? Make sure you are familiar with the waters before heading out. If you are planning on navigating rougher tides, make sure you are a strong swimmer. Also, always take a life jacket no matter what type of swimmer you are. Don't underestimate how strong a current can be.

Home Sweet Home

So you can't afford to go anywhere this summer. No problem, just make the most of the heat in your humble abode!

  • Consider taking a summer class or joining a book group. Even if you're working a full time job, this can be a nice way to pass time on the weekends if all of your friends are away on vacation.
  • Make your backyard fun! Purchase a little inflatable pool It might sound silly but it can nice for dipping your feet in while sipping on a summery cocktail
  • Pamper yourself! Get a few pedicures  over the summer or treat yourself to a nice spa trip It's a great way to relax without having to go too far.
  • Outdoor furniture or a grill could be a nice addition for your home. They are a great way to lounge and enjoy the warm weather.
  • Have something you've been wanting to do all year? Finishing that photo album Writing your prize-winning novel Well, now's your chance to do it! Use the warm weather and fresh air as your inspiration.
