Taylor Swift

I had to do some digging on this one. I've never heard a Taylor Swift song before writing this guide, so I poked around the Internet, watched a couple of her videos, and read reviews of her albums by hipster music critics. Perhaps the best quote that captures her appeal come from the AV club's Amelie Gilette, who wrote, "We all know that Taylor Swift is a magical starlight unicorn in a rapunzel costume trapped in a sticker on the cover of a Lisa Frank binder. That's just who she is. And, of course, we all know that Taylor Swift's music is the aural equivalent of oatmeal (with a dash of glitter)." Harsh, but sorta funny. And it does capture the detractor's point of view.

Swiftly Rising

Taylor Swift, the poppy princess of young country, is probably best known for the snubbing she received at the hands of Kanye West during the MTV video music awards show. She won the award for her music video "You Belong With Me", a catchy song of high school romance, drama, disappointment, and joy. She returned to these themes repeatedly, and most of her major songs are about the trials of young love, resplendent with fairypop rock band The Jonas Brothers.  Now, while you may be too cool for Taylor Swift because you're old and all your money goes to Wild Turkey, I say cut her some slack. I'm of the mind that just because she's not my cup of tea, that doesn't mean she doesn't do what she does well. So, if you like youthful, wide eyed romance, give Taylor Swift a shot. You may fall in love.

Fearless

Calling Taylor Swift country is a bit of a stretch. Like her idol Shania Twain, she's veered a little too deep into the pop scene to bear much resemblance to the Dolly Partons and Loretta Lynns that first brought the voice of American country music to life. She's got two albums under her belt, a movie, a bunch of Grammys and country-music awards, a hosting slot on Saturday Night Live, and enough success to guarantee a long career at the top. Top singles include"Tim McGraw", "Our Song", "Teardrops on my Guitar", "Fifteen", "White Horse", and "You Belong with Me", which I think is kinda cute.
