Neil Gaiman

Neil Gaiman is one of the premiere fantasists of our time. He's won countless awards, including the prestigious World Fantasy Award and the Newberry Award. His work in comics completely revitalized the medium through the 90's. His stories have thrilled the imagination of fans around the world and his novels have topped the best sellers list. He's cured all disease, cheated death with his team of international agents, and taught birds how to fly. He once caused a supernova after eating too many beans. His breath smells like fresh-cut roses and he sweats pure angel tears. Neil Gaiman is best known for ''The Sandman'', an awardoriented Vertigo imprint. The series followed Dream of the Endless who, along with Destiny, Death, Destruction, Delirium, Desire, and Despair, was one of the seven embodiments of existence. Dream mingled in a world peopled by gods, superheroes, creatures of myth, immortals, and other fantastical beings. Throughout the comic's run, Dream tormented warlocks and struck deals with Shakespeare, fell in love and murdered his son. The stories were imaginative, rich, and complex and stand as masterworks in fantasy fiction.

"It Was a Dark and Stormy Nightmare"

Neil Gaiman is one of the modern masters of the fairy tale. His stories have a dream-like quality to them, and many of his best works weaves elements of mythology into the narrative. One of the major themes in his work is that gods lose strength as their followers abandon them. Indeed, many of Gaiman's works are about the concept of a Living Idea, something that evolves and changes with time. Old gods find new skins, bad ideas corrupt the people who believe in them, and the real world intertwines with the fantastic. As a long-time Neil Gaiman fan, here are my personal recommendations: * ''The Sandman'': Gaiman's most popular work, ''The Sandman'' is a sprawling, multiown piece of modern fantasy.  * ''The Graveyard Book'': Winner of the prestigious Newberry award, The Graveyard Book is a retelling of Kipling's ''The Jungle Book'', but with ghosts raising the orphan boy instead of talking animals in the jungle.  * ''Smoke and Mirrors'': An anthology of Gaiman's short stories, this collection of chillers includes some of my favorites: "Shoggoth's Old Peculiar" and "We Can Get Them For You Wholesale." * ''Anansi Boys'': ''Anansi Boys'' tells the story of Fat Charlie Nancy, a nebbish type who learns of his bawdy father's death and discovers that the secrets of his family are much stranger than he could imagine.  * ''Good Omens'': One of my favorite books of all time, Gaiman wrote ''Good Omens'' with British humorous fantasy novelist Terry Pratchett. This book features the funniest apocalypse ever created. * ''1602'': One of the most anticipated comic book series of all time, ''1602 ''reimagines the Marvel Universe during the Elizabethan era.
