John Ronald Reuel Tolkien was an English writer, poet, philologist (person who studies languages), and university professor. He is best known as the author of ''The Hobbit'' and ''The Lord of the Rings''. (Perhaps you saw these films that won 17 Academy Awards and were named some of the best movies of the decade.) Although Tolkien has written numerous essays and short stories, he is remembered for his epic fantasy tales and composing that enchanting Elvish language.
