Mountain Bike Derailleurs

The water bottle with you. It won't be that much easier.

History

Derailleurs, commonly referred to simply as "bike gears," were invented in the 1800s. The first major improvement was with the 1905 invention of the twobikes'>downhill mode. In 1937, the derailleur gear was included in the Tour de France for the first time. They became standard in 1938.

Front Derailleurs

* The chain from one side to the other through the chainrings. Due to the difference in chain sizes it should be able to be adjusted accordingly. * The chain should only touch the cage while shifting, otherwise it is not properly attached. If that's not the case, the cage size might not be appropriate for your bike. Double check if there are problems. * The front derailleur can be comprised of carbon fiber. * If you experience problems check the limits on the front derailleur. The inner plate of the cage should be 1 to 2mm distance from the chain. For the outer plate also allow 1 to 2mm distance from the outer side of the chain.

Rear Derailleurs

* The sprockets but it must also prevent chain slack. * Like the front derailleur it can be made up of a composite of materials. * It is important to understand the cage length in relation to the rear derailleur because it will determine if the rear derailleur can pick up the chain slack or not. In order to determine what size cage you need, add the size difference between the largest and smallest chainrings to the size difference between the largest and smallest sprockets in the system.  * If you are experiencing problems with the rear derailer the screws may need to be adjusted. These screws limit high and low gear on the rear derailleur. The chain will fall off if they are too loose and will not move properly if too tight.

Other Important Factors

* Mountain bikes use a racing bikes come with either two or three chainrings. * As for things like swing type you might want to stick with bottom swing. It is more common and probably easier for a beginner or learner. * The alternative is the top swing and that would allow for flexibility in choosing different bike frames. It is still more ineffective than the top swing, though, and can be used as an alternative when the top swing cannot be applied.
