Hydraulic Fittings

Wherever you're using hydraulicsyou need to make sure you have the right fittings to make things work. After all, you're dealing with fluid, which if not channeled properly can leak and do serious damage to your brakes, your car, and yourself. Replacing the hydraulic fittings in your car yourself can help keep things airtight and flowing smoothly, if you know what you're doing.

Purpose

Hydraulic fittings have one main purpose: they bind hydraulic hoses to the hydraulic reservoir. Some hydraulic systems, which use pipes or tubes, are bound by flanges or welding instead. The bind between a fitting and a hose is called swaging; the point where fittings and hoses swage can often be the weakest point of the hydraulics system of the car. So it's important to make sure your replacement parts match up with your current system; new hoses must match the old ones, and new fittings must be able to fit the new hoses.

Fitting Measurements

Most hydraulic fittings are steel, though you can find some variety if you look for it. While you can get what you need from a hydraulic brake fitting kit, which often includes hoses and leak testers.  You can also pick up parts individually or as needed, though a kit may offer a better value if you're completely overhauling your hydraulics. These kits also tend to be sold by car model/make, so compatibility is less of an issue here. There are also bulk assortments of fittings, with a variety of fitting sizes. These include: * Straight 1/428 * 45 1/428 * 90 1/428 * Straight 1/8-inch NPT * 90 1/8-inch NPT * 45 1/8-inch NPT These of course should fit the hose and the hydraulic reservoir. Improperly fitted hydraulic fittings can lead to accidents on the road, so doubleserviced vehicle out for a spin. And remember, whenever you're dealing with hydraulic fluids, you need to be careful. They are flammable and dangerous to the touch, so gloves and goggles are required when working on that area of a car or machine.
