Hard Rock

By User:Kristenmollica @timeAndDate(1271440096) Do you find that Slayer is just too heavy and makes your ears bleed? But is Coldplay just way too soft that it makes you want to weep from boredom? Well there's a solution to this case of Goldiebetween" music to satisfy your musical cravings. Hard rock falls somewhere between rock and metal. It relies on distorted guitars with heavy riffs. It's gone through some drastic changes over the years so let's take a look at this misunderstood genre.

Rockin' Roots

Hard rock music has been thrashing about and angering parents since the 60s and 70s. However, these bands are not what our current generation deems as 'hard rock.' But keep in mind that these bands were considered 'heavy' at the time. Hard rock music has its roots in garage, blues, and psychedelic rock (what we would now call classic rock). The main aspect to remember is that hard rock bands produce a heavier sound. These bands may incorporate many different styles and cross over genres, but they are considered our founding fathers of hard rock. *Led Zeppelin II, are more rock and less folk and blues then later albums. * Who's Next is their most celebrated album, and their heaviest. *The Book of Taliesyn mesh psychedelic and progressive music with a heavy edge. *School's Out.  *Toys in the Attic is one of their most successful albums.

Attack of the Eyeliner

We all know the 80s were a time of horrendous fashion and awesome music. Suddenly men realized that it was fun to wear women's makeup and have long, frizzy, unkempt hair. This is the era of glam rock. Don't get scared, not all the hard rockers of the 80s were into the glam scene. We step away from blues and psychedelic and move into a era that better defined the genre. More metal influences can definitely be heard and wailing guitar solos always seem to work their way in. *second album is hard rock at its finest with their hit "High 'N' Dry (Saturday Night)." *Shout for the Devil are classics. *Appetite for Destruction, you just don't love yourself.

Party Time! Excellent!

The 90s was a fantastic time for ripped jeans, flannel, and alternative music. Sadly, hard rock took a bit of a hiatus in the early 90s so there wasn't much partying going on. Instead, grunge took center stage. Many 80s bands continued to thrive though into the early 90s but times were a changin' and the sounds of the underground began to take hold.

The Genre Lives On

The 90s were rough on us fans but towards the end of the decade hard rock musicians exploded back onto the scene. All those years of hiding got us a little ticked off so naturally, we flooded the market with our studded belts, black shirts, and headbanging. Current hard rock acts now  have had 40 years of influence to make for the ultimate melting pot of music. Many bands today mix in alternative, post-grunge, metal, and rap. Here's a nice chunk of modern bands to check out to make up for all those lost years. * Staind * Three Days Grace * Audioslave * Seether * Velvet Revolver * Dark New Day * Cold * Breaking Benjamin * Chevelle * Sick Puppies
