Skiing at an advanced or
be safe, but you can still improve and challenge yourself.
Your Equipment
As an
expert skier, it's important that you have gear that will be able to support you throughout a variety of conditions and terrain. Since you're a veteran on the slopes, you're probably already familiar with some of the brands and styles out there, but the finer details may be beyond you. We have some advice for purchases and upgrades.
Suitable sidecuts and brands vary from person to person (consider demoing a few different pairs to find the best options for you), but most expert skiers need skis stiff enough to support them at high speeds and short enough to easily maneuver through the bumps. If you have one type of skiing you like to do best, look for products that are made specifically for that purpose.
* Many expert skiers like all mountain skis as they perform well in a variety of conditions and on most terrains.
* If your focus is on speed, you may want to look for a style that is similar to a racing ski: stiffer and with a similar sidecut.
Your boots should offer maximum support, as anyone performing at a high level puts a lot of pressure on their ankles and hips throughout turns. To prevent runaway skis and potential injuries, make sure that your bindings are set to the proper release settings for your level. Ask a technician to be sure, but you can also consult a
binding setting calculator for a general idea.
Once you have equipment that will support you and your needs, it's important that you take good care of it. Tune your skis regularly. A
wax will not only enhance your turning experience, but will keep you safe as well. You can learn to do this on your own, or take your skis to a shop to get them tuned before you go out for the day.
