Vehicle GPS

It's time for a road trip across America to go visit the giant ball of yarn. Both you and your cat are so excited! You've been saving for this trip for years. But Mittens can't read the map... because he's a cat... and he doesn't have thumbs. So what better time than now to equip your car with a GPS. It'll do a way better job than Mittens ever could.

Types of GPS

There are three types of GPS systems you can have for your vehicle: * '''Portable GPS''': This is the most common GPS because like the name says, it's portable. They're all touchscreen and easy to use. They generally look the same and either mount on your dashboard or your windshield. Prices range from as little as $100 to over $300 depending on the features. * '''In-Dash GPS''': These are built into your car's dashboard so no letting your friends or family borrow it. These systems also tend to be multimedia centers so you can hook up your MP3 player, make phone calls, and even watch movies. These are much more expensive, the cheapest being around $500. * '''Motorcycle GPS''': Of course you can try to use a regular portable GPS for your motorcycle but it just won't be as durable. A motorcycle GPS is specifically made to withstand outside elements, like dirt and water. They are also vibration tested and can still be used if you are wearing gloves. However, these are much more expensive, starting at $600.

Bonus Features

Like any electronic device, it all boils down to features. What extra features do you ''really'' need and how can you get the most for your money. Here is a list of some extra features to consider: * '''Text to speech''' is a new feature on many higher end models that will say the street names as opposed to "Turn in 50 feet." * A '''Go Home" button''' from any screen in case your trip to the giant ball of yarn isn't quite as good as you hoped. * '''Points of interest''' feature which can find local restaurants, attractions, hotels, gas stations and more. * '''Bluetooth''' technology will allow you to make phone calls from the GPS. * '''Traffic reports''' are a good add-on feature but often requires a monthly description. * Enjoy the sweet sounds of your '''MP3s''' while trying to hear directions. * The Garmin nuvi 1490 can actually plan the most '''eco-friendly route'''.

Brands

The major players for portable systems are Garmin, Magellan, and TomTom. However, Garmin leads the way for motorcycle GPS devices. TomTom currently offers just two models versus Garmin's four. Clarion, Kenwood, and Pioneer are the top manufacturers for in-dash systems.
