Drive Train Cooling Lines

Oh man. You really don't want  to be cruising the two-lane blacktop of the Southwest in summer only to see that little wisp of steam leaking out from the hood of your car. So you pull over and try to check the damage only to see your car steaming like a badly maintained sauna at a questionable massage parlor.  If you want your car trip to have a happy ending, you have to make sure your transmission is properly cooled, especially during the hottest times of the year. V6 and V8 engines usually have cooling lines running from the transmission to the radiator. The purpose of these lines is to regulate the coolant in the transmission, preventing the car from overheating and the engine block from shutting down. Coolant flows from the transmission to the radiator, where it is cooled and sent back to the transmission. As such, they're vital to your car's maintenance.

Cooling Line Upkeep

Cooling lines are durable and can withstand a lot of wear, but vibrations and regular wear takes their toll. A break in the line can create a slow leak, which keeps fluid from reaching the transmission and can crack your engine block. Fortunately, it's fairly easy to replace cooling lines, once you determine that they're the source of the leak.  # Park your car on a flat surface and allow your car to cool, which will cause the fluid to settle out of the lines and back into the transmission. Set a drip pad down to catch any transmission fluid that spills while you work. # The cooling lines are usually connected to the transmission by a couple of flare nuts. Use a flare nut wrench in counterclockwise turns to loosen the nuts and carefully remove the line. Don't use other tools to remove the nuts as they could damage the fasteners and weaken the connection. # Feed the new cooling line from the radiation to the transmission and reattach the line to the vehicle. # Refill the transmission fluid back to full you should be good to go. Be careful the first few times you drive and check to see if there are any coolant leaks in the line.  # Stay golden, Pony Boy
