Center Links

Many of us take for granted all the components of our cars. We turn on the engine, blast the music, roll down the window, and speed down the street to our destination. The only time we really care about how our car works is when it's not working, and how much it will cost to fix it. A steering wheel left and right to dodge innocent pedestrians, we can thank the center link and all the parts that make up a car's steering system.

How All These Doodads Work

In order to fully appreciate the center link, we must take a look at how a car's steering system works. So let's take a crash course in steering (pun intended). There are two types of steering systems, rack and pinion steering so we'll look at each one separately.

Mechanical Steering System

* The steering wheel is connected to a steering box. ** If you have power steering, hydraulic steering fluid will help rotate the steering wheel. * The steering box has a steering gear and to the center link. * The other end of the center link is connected to an idler arm. * The center link also has inner tie rod ends on each side which allows the steering gear to pivot. ** An outer tie rod ends. ** The outer tie ends connect to a lower ball joints to turn the front wheels. * In simple terms, the center link keeps the left and right wheels working together when you steer.

Rack and Pinion Steering System

* The steering box and the center link are one unit, known as a rack, in this type of system.   * The rack is connected to the steering column which connects to your steering wheel. * Inside the rack is a piston then moves the steering gear. ** The steering gear will turn your wheels in the appropriate direction. * Because there are far less parts, a rack and pinion system gives more accurate steering. However, a faulty rack requires entire replacement.

Buying Center Links

When buying a center link, or any car part online, always make sure you select the correct year and model for your car to make sure it fits. Some popular car parts brand names include center link support kit will give you most of the parts you need so you don't have to buy individually.
