Manual Transmission

Driving a vehicle takes more than knowing how to shift gears and step on pedals. Basic surface knowledge on how a car works will prove to be useful in circumstances where you might need to employ some basic knowledge. Knowing your car engine is one of the basic skills that you should be equipped with. Cars either have manual or automatic transmission. Manual transmission cars are known as "stick shift" because the driver has to control the clutch pedal. Learning to drive these cars takes a bit more practice. Older cars and sports car tend to be manual while most other cars are automatic (requiring no shifting of gears).

How It All Works

Without getting into a crazy amount of detail, let's take a basic crash-course lesson about the parts that make up manual transmission engines.  * There are two main types of manual transmission: sliding gear transmission and the constant mesh design. The former has become obsolete, while the latter is still being used on economic model cars.  * The manual gearbox is what governs the mechanism of the manual transmission system.  * The clutch engages the gears to change smoothly under the manual transmission systems. It is therefore important to press on the clutch each time the gears are changed so they don't end up grinding on each other and ruining the whole system. * A series of shafts and output shaft, and the countershaft.  * Along each gear is what is known as a shifting hub. The dog clutch has teeth which will lock the gear to the mainshaft. * A blocking ring rubs on the gear which allows you to change speeds. * An idler gear prevents your car from ever going in reverse while the car is moving forward.

Accessories

Taking care of your car is one of the essential skills that all car owners should have. These ensures that you get the optimum performance out of your vehicle and maintains the vehicle in pristine condition.  * Lubricants should be placed on pistons and other parts of the engine to reduce friction and ensure that all is kept well maintained. *grease are great as lubricants, but also to ensure that moving parts in a vehicle do not get stuck and rusted over extended periods of use.  * Manual transmission rubber. * Manual transmission fluids are great for ensuring that your transmissions move smoothly.  * Remote starters for manual transmissions are different from their automatic counterparts so make sure you purchase the right one.
