Toaster Ovens
The toaster oven is a master of delivering crisp veggies burgers, mini-bagel pizzas, Hot Pockets, ready-to-bake biscuits, and other such frozen foods that all too frequently end up in microwaves because no one wants to wait for the conventional oven to pre-heat. On the other hand, they also save space and money for small apartments or dorm rooms that can't fit a full-size oven. If you live in an urban apartment (read: space challenged), you'll definitely want to consider the size of the toaster oven.
The toaster oven, as implied by the slightly deceptive name, is a small oven that handles a variety of low volume tasks such as toasting, baking, and cooking, and it even comes with movable shelves. However, it is not meant as a replacement for the standard toaster. It just doesn't compare at toasting. But what it can do is accommodate a variety of irregular shapes and other items that do not fit in, or would fall apart in, a toaster.
If you encounter yourself with minor baking needs, then a toaster oven is an ideal solution. However, if you are primarily looking to toast bagels, bread slices, toaster pastries, and the like, I would recommend a pop-up toaster.
Features To Look For- A non-stick
or porcelain interior makes for easier clean up as do removable crumb trays.
- Broil feature
(especially for hamburgers) and a warming compartment (if you like the warming drawer feature on regular ovens).
- infrared
for toasting and convection for roasting and baking.
- Thermostat
to get a variety of cooking abilities.
- Timer with automatic shut-off (a nice safety feature).
- Self-cleaning function
-- many models are self-cleaning which means that the food particles inside will fall to the bottom and disintegrate over time.
