Juicers Buying Guide

Using a juicer  on certain fruits  and vegetables  can make it easier to help you obtain certain vitamins  and chemicals from your foods. The most important thing to decide before you buy a juicer is to plan out what fruits or vegetables you will use. Are you looking to reduce the drudgery of making freshly squeezed OJ for your Sunday brunch? Or, are you a health-conscious person who wants to make fresh fruit and vegetables part of your daily routine? No matter who you are or what you are looking for, there is a device out there for you.

Types

Citrus Juicers

Centrifugal Juicers

  • Spins at high speeds in a spinning motion away from center, chopping and grounding produce; spinning motion extracts juice by separating it from pulp
  • Tends to be noisy.
  • Fine for all types of fruits and vegetables.
  • Be sure it has at least a one year warranty.
  • A centrifugal-ejection machine will eject the (hopefully dry) pulp and therefore requires less cleaning.

Juice Extractors

Juice Masticators

  • Grinds or kneads fruit against a screen to separate the liquid from the solid.
  • Pulp is put into a separate outlet so that solids can be used or thrown away.
  • Better at preserving nutrients as they slowly extract juice from the fruit at low speed and with no spinning action.

Manual Juicers

  • Build upper body strength while making delicious beverages.
  • Not practical for hard vegetables.
  • They take up a lot of counter space and don't fit well in cabinets, but they make a statement.

Wheatgrass Juicers

Features to Consider

There are many things you should consider in determining which juicer is best for you.

Pulp Facts

  • Some people like their juice with lots of pulp, and some like it 100% pulp-free. If you are particular about particulates, make sure to get a juicer with adjustable pulp levels .
  • Look for models that offer automatic pulp ejection  so you can juice away without having to stop to remove the pulp.

How Much Juice for your Juice?

  • The more powerful the device, the better equipped it is to handle large quantities of produce or hard vegetables, like carrots.

Cover Your (Wheat) Grass

  • If you are a hard-core consumer and like to throw all manner of things into your breakfast drink, consider getting a juicer with a good, long warranty. You might just need it!
  • Be sure to check the terms of the warranty. Some cover the blade and the motor for different lengths of time.

Odds and Ends

  • Capacity should, of course, figure into your decision.
  • Is it easy to clean?
  • Does it have a see-through chamber?
  • Do you need a juicer, or will a food processor with a special attachment work for you?
  • On the other hand, do you want something that can also function as a pasta extruder , nut butter grinder or soy milk extruder ? All this and more is possible with certain models. Check out: Samson 6 in 1 Electric Juicer and Food Processor .

Clean It Up

No matter how advanced your juicer is, there will come a time when a thorough cleaning will have to take place. Follow our guidelines for how to go about giving your machine the proper make-over.

  1. Unplugging: Please, please, please remember to unplug the juicer from the electrical outlet! We really wouldn't want you to end up juiced!
  2. Disassembling: Begin by disassembling, which means that you should remember to keep the instructions upon purchasing the machine.
  3. Dumping: Empty out the container that catches pulp.
  4. Rinsing: Rinse out each piece under running water.
  5. Brushing: With a set of small brushes  or toothbrush , scrape and brush out all the hard-to-reach nooks and crannies.
  6. Soaking: Fill your sink with tepid-warm water and dish soap, and let each piece soak for a few minutes. You can then rinse and wash them, brushing them again if needed. (Note: The mesh strainer can easily build up with pulp and fruit debris, so don't let particles to dry in there!)
  7. Wiping Outside: Remember to also wipe down and clean the outside of the machine.
  8. Drying: Let the pieces dry out.
  9. Reassembling. Put it all back together and enjoy some more juicing action!
