Beds

A good bed  is a comfortable bed. A comfortable bed  means a good night's sleep. A good night's sleep leads to a good day. Get it? It's practically mathematical, and we all know math doesn't lie. If you don't already have a bed you love sinking into nightly, it's time to start looking. Start thinking about what type of mattress you may like, soft mattress ,medium mattress , or a firm mattress .  Many say that a firm mattress gives them better support and reduces back pain, but others say it's like sleeping on a washboard  and aren't able to get a good night sleep on them. If you need help finding the perfect bed, this is the place to look.

The Bare Bones of Bed Sizes

 What you need to consider:

  • Do you sleep alone?
  • Is this for every day use, or occasionally for guests?
  • Is there a style that you fancy?
  • What size bed are you most comfortable in?
  • If you sleep with a partner, do you have trouble sleeping without your own space?
  • Do you want a slat system  for a lower profile, or do you like your sleeping high off the ground with a box spring ?
  • What is the available space in your bedroom?

Once you determine what will work best to meet these needs, you can start looking into styles and sizes.

  • One Person
    • Twin : 39"x75"
    • Twin XL  (college dorms, for the most part): 39" x 80"
    • Full : 54" x 75"
  • Two People
  • These are standard U.S. sizes. Standard sizes in other countries may vary.

Bed Designs

Like the rest of your furniture, your bed's style can expand infinitely in any direction. Once you've covered your sleeping needs, have fun choosing the style! They can be anything from simple to extravagant and flirty to functional. Metal headboards and footboards usually convey a more modern look, while wood, ever the versatile medium, can convey anything from country casual to royal European.

Classic Designs

Wooden Beds  are classic, earthy, sturdy and heavy. Depending on the style you choose, a wood framed bed  can be simple  or ornate. A popular wooden frame style is the sleigh bed, which has a exagerrated footboard as well.

Metal Beds  can look trendy , stark, elegant  or rustic . Can't choose between metal  and wood? Try a frame that combines  both. Those who hate headboards should look into a metal platform  bed.

Platform beds  offer a much cleaner, more modern look. Good for low-ceiling rooms or minimalists who don't like a cluttered look. The opposite of the platform  bed is either the sleigh bed  or the canopy.

Four-Poster Beds  and Canopy Beds  are for the royalty in us all. You need a lot of room to pull this one  off, and high ceilings couldn't hurt either. This look is improved upon with lots of pillows.

Leather Beds  add a classic look to a room. This warm, study-like  look requires a lot of space; after all, it's no good jamming a luxurious  bed into a closet sized room. Think warm browns, creams, and fluffy pillows; avoid suede.

Space-Saving Beds

Bunk beds  are great way to save space when your kids have to share a room, or if they just like having sleep overs. Great for older kids and teens, especially bed models with a wider bed  on the bottom.

Trundle beds  hide a spare bed underneath the primary bed, perfect for guests. Trundle beds tend to be merged with day beds  either by design or by adding a pop up  trundle.

Futons  are a wooden or metal frame and mattress combo so that your bed can double as a couch. They're versatile and inexpensive, but less supportive. Slip covers  can be added to freshen up a look.

Day beds  are twin beds with sides and and a back for a double duty as a sofa, making this another guest-friendly space saver. This is a pillow -heavy bed, unless you and your guests like leaning on metal bars.

Lofted beds  give you more floor or drawer space. Great for apartments, dens, or guestrooms. Loft beds  can have a desk  or a futon  built in on the bottom in lieu of blank space, or a play area for kids.

Alternatives

Round beds  are unusual and certainly attention-getting. They're hyper "modern", so it can be hard to avoid looking like you're trying to pull off a futuristic look from the distant past.

Hammocks  are great for relaxing summer naps. Don't forget to get a pad  so the ropes don't hurt you. Definitely a more quirky option when used indoors, more for singles than couples.

Sofabeds  offer the same space-saving convenience as a futon, but their mattresses usually aren't very good. They're more for a brief visits than a permanent sleep space.

Murphy beds  fold up into the wall or a cabinet when not in use. They're great space savers, but because they often need bolting to the wall or floor, construction is a factor.

Children's bed sets  can be a fun way to express your child's interests . However, as your kid's tastes change, they'll want a more mature set; a simple twin  may be more economical.
