Word Processing Software

So you've got the perfect home office setup: computer, desk, printer, filing cabinets, video chat (oh, yes welcome to the space age) but you're still missing a key ingredient: word processing software. Word processing software allows you to manage, create, and edit text based documents, an important function for students, business owners, and just about every other computer user. There's really only two major brands of word processing software out there today. They are the Corel WordPerfect Office Suite and the Microsoft Office Family of Products; between them they got more than 99% of the market cornered. Corel's word processor is called (what else?) WordPerfect and its latest iteration is X5. MS Office's word processor is Microsoft Word and its latest iteration is 2007, though some expansion into Word 2010 is available. Both of these programs are sold as standalone software, but are more commonly included as part of an office program suite. Office suites commonly include expanded document processing capabilities: such as spreadsheet programs and presentation creation software. More inclusive office suites include full productivity options for small business all the way up to major corporations such as relational database software, and workgroup connectivity. Before deciding on a particular product, you'll have to think about what components you need. Ask yourself some questions about what you intend to use the software for: Do you mean to keep inventory or customer databases? To use software to take down and share quick notes from a variety of media? Do you need publishing software? Office software can be quite expensive, so think seriously about what functionality you won't need. Below we'll take a look at the two major word processing and office suites out there today.

Microsoft Office Family of Products

Ok, to get some good old word processing done, you need nothing more than Microsoft Office Word 2007. However, you'll get a better deal out of investing in an office suite, and exponentially increase your capabilities in the meantime. Right now, if you buy any Office 2007 product it comes with a free (optional) upgrade to Office 2010. However, 2010 is still in beta, so it's not available as a standalone product yet. Microsoft Office comes packaged in a variety of ways, here's some of the most popular. ! * Microsoft Office Basic 2007 ** Includes MS Word, MS Excel, and MS Outlook, an email client. ** Ideal for common home users. * Microsoft Office Home & Student 2007 ** Includes MS Word, MS Excel, and MS Powerpoint, a presentation creation program. ** Ideal for students and bringing work home from the office. ** Provides the basic range of services, but no email client. * Microsoft Office Standard 2007 ** Includes the Home & Student suite as well as  MS Outlook. ** Ideal for students and bringing work home from the office, with added email capability. * Microsoft Office Small Business 2007 ** Includes the Home & Student suite as well as MS Outlook with business contact manager and MS Publisher, a publication software for pamphlets, booklets, web content, etc. ** Ideal for small business without a need for extensive electronic databases. * Microsoft Office Professional 2007 ** Includes the Small Business suite as well as MS Access, a powerful relational database software. ** Ideal for small to medium sized business with complicated database problems such as inventory management. * Microsoft Office Enterprise 2007 ** Includes a whole host of business software, too much to list here, but some examples are information rights management software, integrated electronic forms, MS OneNote, and MS Groove. ** Ideal for medium to large business with large, networked offices.

Corel WordPerfect Office Suite

WordPerfect has been around since well, since when it was a blue screen with a flashing cursor, and nobody owned a printer at home because they were too expensive. If all you're looking for is a word processor, all you need is WordPerfect X5, but, again, you get a better deal out of buying packaged products. * Corel WordPerfect Office X5 Home & Studen ** The most basic product, includes word processing, spreadsheets, presentation software, and some limited PDF tools. ** Ideal for most home users, students especially. * Corel WordPerfect Office X5 Standard ** Includes the Home & Student suite as well as MS SharePoint, a connectivity tool for small business and workgroups, and a more comprehensive range of PDF tools. Also, certain publishing tools are available mainly for web based content. ** Ideal for small business and bringing work home from the office. * Corel WordPerfect Office X5 Professional ** Includes the Standard suite as well as workflow integration apps and relational database software. ** Ideal for businesses with complicated database needs, regardless of size.
