Women's Summer Style Guide

Fall and winter have some bragging rights: thigh high boots ,cropped leather jackets ,scarves  that go on for days. But summer’s got all the possibility. Going to the beach during a Wednesday lunch break becomes a serious consideration. Wearing a bathing suit under a pantsuit seems reasonable.  Havaianas  with an evening gown?  Why not?  It’s hot out!  It’s amazing how the first day of flip-flop  season can make you think wars can end, fractured nations can rebuild. Summer is the time for big, brave thoughts like, “Maybe that denim jumpsuit would look good on me.”

In terms of summer fashion trends, you can’t go wrong with getting a few staples (denim shorts , striped tank tops , a light cardigan ) and throwing in some wild cards (tie-dyed sundress , bright yellow wedges ,Will Ferrell sunscreen ). And though the fashion world would have you believe otherwise, sometimes it’s OK to look back: if that metallic bikini  from last year still looks great, go ahead, girl.  No one’s stopping you. Add a new summer tote  and a beach cover-up  to make things fresh, or shake it up with a polka dot bandanna  on your head. It’s summer, after all. All bets are off.

Summer Must Haves

Ruffles  are back again, with a bit more variety than last year. Look for brightly colored tops  with ruffled embellishments, or a tiered ruffled tank . Throw on a pair of capris  and you've got a fun summer outfit; you can add a cardigan  for a more work-friendly look.

Beaded jewelry  sounds like a summer camp holdover, but we promise, beaded bracelets  and necklaces  are exactly what you need to add some zest to your style. Look for multiple colors and smaller beads  or go in the opposite direction and wear monochromatic large beads .

Espadrilles  help carry this spring's natural style component over into the summer sun. Espadrille wedges  are super feminine, but for days when you're feeling more casual, flats  and a pair of denim shorts should get you through the day.

Classics

When the temperature rises, it's time to ditch the sweater vest  and dive headfirst into summer fashion. These summer staples match your look to the temperature: hot.

Printed Dresses

Summer dresses  are fun, flirty and, let's be honest, easier than other clothes. You could roll up seven in your tote bag  and be set for a week. This summer, go for a print. Or ten.

Shorts

Cutoffs ,bermudas , prints, bolds, denim, or white, shorts all show off your legs, keep you cool, and work with almost any top. Look out for lots of boyfriend shorts  this season.

Light Jackets

You'll need something to cover your golden brown (or lobster red) arms in the evening. A military-inspired denim jacket  could also add a welcome edge to a summer dress.

Open Toe Flats

If you don't want to be that person who wears flip-flops  everywhere, open toe flats are an easy option that's still appropriate for the backyard BBQ or the office.

The White Shirt

It helps to have a white shirt for every season. In the summer, silhouettes range from flowing to fitted. Look for cap sleeves  and tuxedo ruffle fronts . Invest in a great white or nude bra to wear underneath.

Sandals

Sandals can go with anything, whether you're all about maxi dresses or strictly a capri kind of girl; they can dress things up or down as needed. Look for fun designs  and colors  that will work with your wardrobe.

Hats

A straw hat will pair with anything. Wider brim hats  will protect your face and neck from sun damage, but as long as you wear lots of sunblock, a straw trilby  will be fine. Look for lightweight materials so you can keep cool in the sun.

Sunglasses

Whether they're Ray Bans ,aviators , or Jackie O inspired, you'll never go wrong with a pair of shades. Try on a few pairs and see what suits your face. Make sure to pick up a sunglasses case  big enough to hold the specs.

Mini Skirts

The perfect weekend style, mini skirts do require some legwork (!): a leg shine lotion  will add oomph to your gams. Pair with a tank or a breezy bohemian top . Look out for accidental scalding; metal and plastic seats are a mini skirt's enemy.

Summer Dresses

Some women prefer something floaty and cool. A summer dress can be almost anything you want it to be, and best of all, it's really hard to get overheated in.

Floral Dresses

  • Wear heels  to dress it up, or wedges to dress it down.
  • Minimal accessories required.

Extras

When summer rolls around, you've got to be prepared. Stock up on these summer extras; what isn't already a purse will fit neatly in your favorite tote.

Sunscreen

Neither clothes, nor bags, nor shoes will matter much if you're sporting a nasty burn. Badger sunblock  is organic and water-resistant.

Cross-Body Bags

Perfect for swinging over shorts and a tank, or a flirty summer dress.

Kitten Heels

Kitten heels are adorable, dainty, and (sweet mercy) about 10,000 times more comfortable than the average heel.

Hobo Bags

You'll have just as much stuff in the summer as you did in the winter. Just lighten up the color, and a hobo bag still works.

Headbands

Lady Gaga has made it seem unreasonable that you wouldn't have at least something on your head at all times.
