Water Pump Fittings and Accessories
By lgbull
Water pipes are things you wish you knew more about after one in the basement explodes, and you're trying to salvage your old
water pumps before your vehicle starts leaking fluid. Basically, the pump is connected to the other two and helps regulate the temperature of the car with coolant. The pump needs certain "extras" to function. If we're losing you already, "fittings and accessories" sounds like a day at the mall, doesn't it? The water pump is like a store mannequin, and we're going to put some ''amazing'' chunky jewelry on her.
Fittings
First things first. A water pump gets water from one place to another (you're welcome, anytime). Similarly,
car pumps) get one tube, pipe or hose connected the next (or connected to another piece of equipment, like an engine). It's best to think of them like relationships:
* Hooking up two things (hoses, pipes, etc.) that are exactly alike? You'll want a
coupler fitting, which has two identical sockets at its ends.
* Are the two attachments very different? Will compromises have to be made? You're going to need an adapter for this job. For example, a water pump
adapter block can connect the pump directly to the engine, even though they are completely different.
*
Elbow fittings are used to change the direction of water or coolant flow. These aren't so much like relationships, but they operate (and look) remarkably like elbows, which is something!
Accessories
Water pumps have got a lot going on (
water pump seals,
flanges), but here are a few other things that give them real purpose:
* The
radiator hose probably wouldn't be too happy to hear itself called an "accessory" to the water pump. But the water pump works directly with the radiator to keep the car from overheating, and they won't get to each other without the hose.
*
Engine mounts connect the water pump and the engine.
* An
engine thermostat is crucial because it determines how much coolant is needed from the water pump to chill the engine out.
'''Amazing Twist in the Great Water Pump Story''': Don't put water in the water pump! Yeah, crazy. The pump is really for moving
engine coolant or
antifreeze (mixed with some water) between the radiator and the engine.
