Virginia Tech Hokies
So what is a
hokie? Well it is hard to describe, but at least it's not as bad as trying to explain where Hoosier came from. According to Virginia Tech's
official website, the word "hokie" was originally coined in 1896 when the college held a student contest to write a school cheer. The winner's cheer looked something like this:
''"Hoki, Hoki, Hoki, Hy. / Techs, Techs, V.P.I. / Solaia. / Rae, Ri, V.P.I."''
A retired Virginia Tech English professor explains, "[Hokie was] a word that people used to express feeling, approval, excitement, surprise. Hokie, then, is a word like 'hooray,' or 'yeah,' or 'rah.'" Thus, the word kind of stuck with the school, making its students and athletes forever known as Hokies.
