Gaming Steering Wheels

If you are into racing, driving or flight simulation games for your PC, a steering wheel controller will be the best video game accessory you ever purchase. Here is what to consider before buying a gaming steering wheel

Issues to Consider

  • How much space you have. Ideally you'll have a desk, tray or coffee table that can stand as the base for your steering wheel. If this isn't the case, go for a wheel that can fit on your lap.
  • Desk compatibility. Make sure you are able to clamp the steering wheel onto the desk properly. If your desk has a lip, the clamp may not work.
  • Force-feedback. Want rumble action? Crave the g-force when power sliding around corners? Then make sure force-feedback is included as a feature on the device you buy.
  • Shifters. If you play in automatic transmission mode, then don't worry about this feature. However, if manual transmission is your thing, look for a shifter that simulates a Formula 1 car, with a paddle-style gear shift as opposed to a stick shift.
  • Pedals. Consider where you are playing. What texture is the floor -- carpet or tile? Slick surfaces tend to let the pedals slide. If you've got tile, look for bottom-sticking grips or stoppers.
  • Features. If you want to take advantage of all the features on an advanced game you will want more buttons on your steering wheel. Otherwise, you can save money by going for a more basic model.
  • Wheel. Rubberized wheels give you a better grip. Plastic wheels can make your hands sweat and slip.
