Valentine's Day Crafts for Children

From Valentine's Day parties to classroom activities, or just for fun on rainy days, arts and crafts   are a great activity for kids. When it comes to Valentine's Day specifically, red, pink, white, gold and silver are the colors to stick to regardless of what kind of activity you want to do. When in doubt go for items that feature hearts and cupids, but don't discount the popular 'be mine' theme. There are thousands of different crafts that can be adjusted to suit V-Day as well as hundreds of others that are geared specifically to the holiday. Besides those items mentioned below, you should also see the Arts and Crafts Supplies Directory and specifically Arts and Crafts for Kids for more ideas.

Construction Paper

The sky is the limit with construction paper. With some pens pencils and markers construction paper can transform into a work of art. Add glitter feathers or ribbons   and you get a masterpiece.

  • Fold in half to make a card.
  • Stencil, cut, and decorate to make a special card.
  • Glue cut outs from magazines to it to make collages.
  • Cut various pieces and string together to make mobiles.
  • Staple together heart cutouts to make a Valentine wreath.

Doilies

These pre-cut doilies make crafting easy and fun, even for the littlest kids.

  • Glue heart shaped doilies to construction paper and decorate to make pretty cards.
  • Embellish and string together to make hanging decorations.
  • Make placemats with doilies, construction paper, and colored pencils or markers. Laminate to finish and seal the artwork.

Craft Glitter

Glitter is one of those things that are an essential to have in a kid's craft box, especially once they have reached an age where they can be careful enough to not spill it everywhere.

Make sure to get Elmer's Glue   to help apply it and always set kids up with a newspaper covered art station before they begin decorating anything with glitter. (Have a handheld vacuum standing by.)

Glitter can be used on just about any material from paper to cloth, and any item found in nature (pinecones, egg shells, etc).

Pipe Cleaners

In lieu of string or ribbon, pipe cleaners offer a stable way fo stringing items together. They can also be used on their own to create little sculptures.

Glitter Pens

Glitter pens   and gel pens   can be used year round for all sorts of crafts and art activities. They are great for adding a special touch to any Valentine's Day card.

Buy these for older children, especially girls, who will enjoy drawing and writing with these fun pens.

  • Use them to write a Valentine's Day poem on nice paper. Add glitter decorations or drawings and frame.

Stencils

Stencils are great for drawing and for making paper cut out. Valentine's Day inspired sets are really only good for this time of year, but if you are a teacher, these would be a great tool to invest in since they can be used year after year.

Puffy Paints

Puffy paints, colored fabric paint that dries ultra-quickly, is ideal for decorating plain white undershirts or T-shirts. Buy by the package or individually in only Valentine's Day colors. Make sure to draw the patterns you want first and then trace with the paint.

Scratch Paper

Scratch paper, a luxurious addition to the basic craft box, is ideal for older kids who enjoy to draw. Basically, all that's need are a few semi-sharp objects to scrape of the top black layer of the paper to reveal color.

Tissue Paper

Tissue paper is a delicate but very versatile supply to have on hand. You can be as simple or as extravagant as your skills allow you to be.
