Valentine's Day Crafts for Children

From Valentine's Day parties to classroom activities, or just for fun on rainy days, arts and crafts  are a great activity for kids. When it comes to Valentine's Day, red, pink, white, gold and silver are the colors to stick to regardless of what kind of activity you want to do. When in doubt, go for items that feature hearts and cupids, but don't discount the popular 'be mine' theme. There are thousands of different crafts that can be adjusted to suit V-Day as well as hundreds of others geared towards the holiday.

Materials And Decorations

Construction Paper 

The sky is the limit with construction paper. With some pens ,pencils , and markers , construction paper can be transformed into a work of art. Add glitter ,feathers , or ribbons  for a masterpiece.

Doilies 

These pre-cut doilies make crafting easy and fun for even the littlest kids. Use as place settings or glue onto home-made cards for a special touch.

Glitter 

 Glitter is an essential item for arts and crafts and can be used on a variety of fabrics or on natural objects. Cover a table or floorspace with newspaper to help avoid messes, and be sure to have lots of Elmer's Glue on hand.

Pipe Cleaners 

In lieu of string or ribbon, pipe cleaners offer a stable way of stringing items together. They can also be used to create mini sculptures.

Glitter Pens 

Glitter pens  and gel pens  can be used year round for all sorts of crafts and art activities. They are great for adding a special touch to any Valentine's Day card.

Stencils 

Stencils are great for tracing paper cut-outs and can be found in a variety of shapes and sizes. Try making a collage out of several stencils in the same shape.

Puffy Paints 

Puffy paints are colored fabric paints that dry ultra-quickly and are ideal for decorating plain white T-shirts. To ensure accuracy, draw the patterns first and then trace with the paint.

Scratch Paper 

Scratch paper is ideal for creative older kids. All they need are a few semi-sharp objects to scrape off the black top layer to uncover the color underneath.

Tissue Paper 

Tissue paper is a delicate but very versatile material to have on hand. You can be as simple or as extravagant as your skills allow you to be.

Construction Paper Activities

  • Fold in half to make a card.
  • Stencil, cut, and decorate to make a special card.
  • Glue cut outs from magazines to it to make collages.
  • Cut various pieces and string together to make mobiles.
  • Staple together heart cutouts to make a Valentine wreath.

Doily Projects

  • Glue heart shaped doilies to construction paper and decorate to make pretty cards.
  • Embellish and string together to make hanging decorations.
  • Make place mats with doilies, construction paper, and colored pencils or markers. Laminate to finish and seal the artwork.

Pipe Cleaner Crafts

  • Twist pipe cleaners into different shapes. Try a heart or arrow shape with red or pink pipe cleaners. 
  • Cut out a heart shape piece of paper and layer with rows of pipe cleaners.
  • Crumple red tissue paper into a rose shape. Attach to a green pipe cleaner.
