Tree Planting Guide

Nothing brings back memories like when you visit your childhood home and see that the tree you planted with your parents has now become a giant oak.  Planting trees can enhance the landscape of a home, provide shade in the summer, create privacy, and benefit the environment.

Tree Tips

  • Determine what type of tree is right for your region and property.  Do your research and find what kinds of trees flourish in your climate and soil.
  • Don't plant a tree that will just need to be cut down when it outgrows its site.  Take into account its proximity to buildings, sidewalks, driveways, and utility lines.
  • Newly planted trees do best in moderate temperature and rainfall, therefore spring and early fall are generally the best planting seasons.
  • Trees should be planted no deeper than the original soil it comes with.  The width of the hole should be about three times as big as the original container.
  • New trees should be watered upon planting and then at least once a week after that.
  • Stake the tree only when necessary.  If you must, make sure the tree still has a natural degree of movement.
  • Mulch  is good; it keeps the moisture in the soil, prevents weeds, and reduces temperature extremes.
