Toys and Games Sports and Outdoor Play Lawn Games Ring Toss and Horseshoes
Horseshoes and other lawn games make for a great casual game to play at a BBQ or in the backyard on a sunny day. These are games that most anyone can play because they don't require a huge amount of physical activity, and as long as there are no innocent bystanders in the way, coordination can be learned as you play. While there are official rules to playing horseshoes, plastic ring tosses and junior horseshoe sets mean that fun can be had with the kiddos too.
Official Rules
Officially, the stakes must be placed forty feet apart. Players throw both their horseshoes during their turn, one at a time, and they reverse the first person who throws each time. Traditional play is up to 15 points. You win points by getting ringers or having your shoes be within 6 inches of the stake. There are all sorts of shenanigans that can go on though, due to cancellations and bumping. This can lead to some arguing when you don't have a ref. Maybe designate a fair uncle to be an impartial judge at your family BBQ if you choose to play.
