The Golden Girls

No problem in the world can't be solved with four good friends and a cheesecake, preferably late at night! The series had seven glorious seasons, running from 1985-1992. It was one of the most popular sitcoms at the time and still continues to be a favorite among many. A close friend of mine told me that whenever she's not feeling well, she curls up in bed with a pint of ice cream and watches ''The Golden Girls''. Whether you're a woman, a man, young, or old, these four ladies will keep you laughing. I love knowing that ''The Golden Girls'' will never cease to put a smile on my face.
Picture It . . .
The year was 1985 in Miami, Florida and four unlikely women became roommates. The Miami house belonged to widow Blanche Devereaux (Rue McClanahan), who originally rented out two rooms to Rose Nylund (Betty White) and Dorothy Zbornak (Bea Arthur). They quickly got a fourth roommate, Dorothy's mother, Sophia (Estelle Getty), after a certain "incident" with a hot plate burned down Shady Pines Retirement Home. The four had very different personalities but somehow managed to get along.
*Blanche was, well, "promiscuous," to put it nicely: all her stories had to do with sexual encounters. However, this made her an easy target to mock, especially for Sophia.
*Sophia is easily my favorite character because she's sarcastic and has a line for everything. I hope I'm that blunt and spunky when I'm her age. Sophia was definitely given the funniest lineswhen Blanche was asked how long she waited to have sex after her husband died, Sophia responded 'Til the paramedics came!'
*Oh sweet, naive Rose, how can we not love you? Her innocence and simpleAmerican town of St. Olaf, Minnesota. Just thinking about all her ridiculous stories about life on the farm with people named Sven, Lars, or Hans puts a smile on my face. Her stories never really provided any good advice but we still loved to listen.
*Dorothy was definitely the "brains" of the show. Although teased for being the least attractive, Dorothy was always able to bite back with her sarcasm, a quality I've always enjoyed. Although she had a temper, she always gave the best advice.
The show always focused around a conflict that one of the girls was having. Usually they would sit around the kitchen table late at night eating cheesecake, and occasionally other scrumptious desserts, telling stories and giving each other advice. Even though the show was a comedy, there was a tremendous amount of heart and love at the core. Thank you, girls, for being a friend! (I couldn't resist ending it that way.)
