Tennessee acquired its nickname, "The Volunteer State" during the War of 1812. Gen. Andrew Jackson mustered up 1500 men from the state to fight the Indiansat the Battle of New Orleans. During the Mexican war, the governor issued a call for 2800 men...and 30,000 Tennesseans volunteered! So while the Volunteer nickname seems pretty bland at first, after doing some research, it's actually one of the cooler monikers in the NCAA.
