Steven Spielberg
What is there to say about Steven Spielberg that hasn't already been said? He's an Oscar-winning, critically acclaimed director who's one of the pioneers to start the summer blockbuster fad.
Aliens and Monsters
Spielberg just wouldn't be Spielberg if there wasn't some sort of monster, creepy creature, or crazy, bloodlike horror, there's a wide selection to choose from.
* '''Jaws''': One of the first big summer hits, this movie still gives people a fear of the beach. It's based on the book by Peter Benchley, who also help coall the elements a good movie needs.
* '''Jurassic Park, I and II''': Have you ever gone to the zoo? Did the Bengal tigers ever get loose and try to eat you? Well, imagine that but about 100,000 times worse and you'll sympathize with the characters in this movie. T-Rex definitely trumps a Bengal tiger.
* '''War of the Worlds''': You can't have too many movies about lovable, kind aliens (aka, E.T.) so Spielberg threw this one into the mix. These aliens don't just arrive on Earth; they try to take over, destroy cities, and drink human blood. Yum.
Mythology and Science Fiction
Let's face it. The guy's obsessed with science fiction and fantasy. And as result, many of us are obsessed with it as well. Spielberg pulls off the genre with earnest passion, and it really shows. Here are some fun action-packed films.
* '''Indiana Jones Quadrilogy''': Indiana Jones is a classic action-adventure franchise. With Indy, exploring new territories and finding old treasures is fun, exciting, and humorous. If only we could say the same about our college History professors.
* '''Close Encounters of the Third Kind''': Although this technically can go under "aliens and monsters," it really isn't horror as much as it's a science fiction self-discovery film about what's really 'out there.'
* '''Minority Report''': So you're accused of committing a crime you didn't do. That shouldn't be too terrible to prove, right? Well, if you're in a world that arrests people for "pre-crime" then you're in trouble. Good luck running away and be sure to stack up on electrolyte heavy beverages. Even watching this movie gets you right into the action.
Fairy Tales
Part of Spielberg's directorial charm is his innerday fairy tale.
* '''E.T.''': Okay, so this movie is actually kind of scary for little kids at first. But once you get past the fact that nobody else will steal your Reese's pieces except E.T., you'll recover. It's actually a lovable and (mostly) kid-friendly film with a beautiful score by John Williams.
* '''A.I.''': Kubrick's incomplete work was given to Spielberg. That results in a good science fiction film that's predominantly intended as a homage, but still retains all of Spielberg's classic trademarks: tortured and/or scared lonely children, a fairylike robot sentient beings.
* '''Hook''': This is what would happen if Peter Pan actually grew up. He'd be an awkward, quirky, often absent minded father. He really shouldn't have grown up, but that's okay because he's asked to return to Never Never Land anyway!
Drama
Spielberg wouldn't be as acclaimed as he is if he didn't have his melancholic moments. War films, dramas, and historical events are big audience generators, as well as Academy Award generators.
* '''Empire of the Sun''': This war film focuses on the conflict between Japan and China in the Pacific War through the eyes of a kidnapped British boy.
* '''Schindler's List''': Schindler's List is a multiple Academy Award winner, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay. In total, it received 7 wins of the 12 nominations.
* '''The Color Purple''': Amazingly this emotional film about racism and domestic abuse did not win any Academy Awards, even with 11 nominations. It stars Whoopi Goldberg, Oprah Winfrey, Lawrence Fishbourne and Danny Glover.
* '''Amistad''': With another starSpielberg tackled the topic of slave trade and human rights.
* '''Saving Private Ryan''': World War II movies never tire from popularity. They're epic, actionfelt. Spielberg succeeded with all of these in this movie about troops sent out to bring a woman's only living son home.
* '''Catch Me If You Can''': Based on the life of professional conin this fun, humorous chase movie.
* '''Munich''': After the tragic 1972 Olympic Games murders, the Israeli government sends agents on an assassination mission for revenge, honor and country. This movie explores morality and can get pretty intense.
