Spring Style Guide

By riverajessica

Ah, the warm, sweet air of spring. Whether you find it romantic or allergy-inducing , you've got to face facts: you have to update your wardrobe, and we don't just mean trading out your sweater boots for peep-toe sandals . We have good news and bad news. Bad news first: last year's abstract prints and peekaboo tops are out. This is why you shouldn't stockpile fads, especially in the fad-iest season of all, spring. The good news: you can still shop your closet , provided you saved a few key pieces. If spring is about rebirth, this year is all about the rebirth of the 1970's, with fashions that are sophisticated and loose, perfect for whenever the weather gets around to warming up.

General Tips

Dressing for spring is kind of a pain: it can be cold and dry one minute, warm and wet the next. And goodness knows that buying all the latest fashion has a way of stretching even the most flexible of budgets to breaking point. Below are some tips for surviving this season with your sanity--and wallet--intact.

  • Prepare for rain: There are, of course, some lovely, arid areas where this is less of an issue, but the rest of us have to contend with soggy trouser cuffs. If you haven't already, invest in some solid rain gear. Rain jackets ,rain boots ,rain hats , and umbrellas  are very much your friends.
  • Layer up: This is the season of light sweaters  and jackets , and multiple T-shirts . Embrace a layered look whenever possible; it's an easy way to stay warm without overheating.
  • Lighten up: Choose fabrics that are light and breathable. Twill pants  over tweed ,chambray shirts  over denim , and lots of cotton  and linen .

Spring Trends for Women

Spring is a great chance for women to explore some really feminine looks, especially after the ocassional harshness of winter fashions. While last year we saw the rise of ruffles and frills, this year is a lot simpler, and dare we say...minimalist?

Stark

A stripped down, no frills, completely minimalist sort of aesthetic is favored by many designers this spring. Contemplate a solid white dress  paired with chunky black boots  for maximum contrast. This is an austere style, though you can add in some harnesses  and straps for a more futuristic look.

Long and Sheer

An alternative to the previous trend, the focus here is on length and layering. It's all part of the continuing theme of wearing loungewear  as streetwear. You want a flowing silhouette that's light but not too revealing, so this year go with a sheer maxi dress  or a boyfriend cut blouse  for a "just rolled out of bed and I don't care" vibe.

The Neutral Zone

Neutrals are holding strong this season, so don't completely abandon last year's simpler pieces. But where last year you could wear a beige suit  with a cream blouse , you've now got to mix things up! Even classics need some pop; wear a white blouse  and charcoal gray trousers  with some orange jewelry  to accent the outfit.

70s Style

The fads listed above are all minor compared to spring fashion's main event! This year's big look is absolutely nostalgic. Having finally exhausted the sartorial supply of the 1980's, we've taken up some of the styles of the seventies, with a few modern twists, of course.

Bell Bottoms are Back

This year some styles are still in transition; basically, skinny pants  aren't quite dead yet. That said, trousers  and jeans  are popping up with wider legged hems. Try high-waisted trousers  and jeans  to properly channel the seventies. For denim in particular, the legs should flare at the knee .

Let It Flow

When it comes to tops, look for fabrics that are loose and flowy. Cut is important too; cape blouses ,dolman sleeves , and cropped sleeve blouses  create an open silhouette that's a welcome change from recent, more constricting lines. For a nighttime look, seek out tops with a metallic tint .

Platform Shoes

Though not exactly the boogie shoes  of yore, this season has brought some height back with platforms . Which isn't to say we'll all be teetering around precariously come spring; this season is very foot-friendly with platform wedges ,kitten sandals , and clogs .

Earthy Jewelry

Jewelry this season is more mineral-rich, with designers taking their cues from the local Natural History museum. Look for quartz  or geode  pieces. If pyrite doesn't do it for you, you can also try long beaded strands , or long pendant necklaces .

Macrame I?

When you just aren't in the mood for some of the season's more silky styles, try something with a bit more texture. Whether it's crochet  or macrame , you can't go wrong with a craft-knit top or dress. You can also look for this homemade style in purses  and other fashion accessories .

Spring Colors

The big colors this year are a bit warm for spring, but that doesn't mean they aren't lively.  You're best bet is to wear "In" colors in small doses: a T-shirt here, a ring there, and so on.

Jewel Tones

A range of jewel tones --individually or featured in a print--mix well with neutrals, to better create a multi-layered spring look.

Citrus

Citrus colors like orange and chartreuse are season standouts. A chartreuse dress  could brighten a dreary day and orange ballet flats  can add to zest a neutral-heavy outfit.

Stripes

A more casual look for spring that's getting a lot of attention: stripes ! Bold stripes are fun and casual: a feminine , if not especially fussy, way to inject lots of color into your ensemble.

Spring Trends for Men

Guys are also feeling the seventies trend this year, albeit in more subtle ways. Quite a few classics are back, but we aren't talking leisure suits.

Styles to Snag

Return of the Masculine Cut

Classic men's suits are getting a revival this spring. Broad shoulders ,slim trousers , and peaked lapels  help send a message that you're powerful and fit, not to mention stylish.

Flared Jeans

Don't panic boys, we aren't talking full bell bottoms just yet. The seventies-influenced designs for men have a hem that's only slightly wider than boot cut jeans . They fit slim overall, so don't retreat to your old baggy jeans just yet.

Motorcycle Man

Normally leather jackets are a fall mainstay, but this spring, designers have been all over biker jackets for men . More greaser than moto, the right fit will having you looking like a young Marlon Brando .

Show Some Neck

Standard peaked lapels on dress shirts  aren't going anywhere, but this season is a good time to experiment. Nehru collars  can be worn with a blazer and slacks, or with jeans for more casual situations.

Casual Belts

Classy leather belts  are fine for dressing up, but if you want to look cool and keep your pants up, this season is all about the braided belt . It can be worn with jeans and chinos, and isn't out of place on Casual Fridays.
