At some point in your life you've played volleyball. Whether it was for fun, during high school gym, or on a team, you know there's more to the sport than hitting a ball over the net. Volleyball is a game of strategy, skill, and teamwork. It's also a game where players fall often and fall hard. That's why the you need the right equipment, gear, and apparel when you're on the court.
What You Need
Although volleyball is played on indoor courts, it's also a game that can be played outdoors and on various surfaces including sand, grass, and even water. Yes, water! Now, apparel and gear will differ depending on the type of volleyball you play. However, most volleyball games take place on hard courts, so if you're new to the game, you will need a few essential pieces of apparel.
* '''Knee Pads''': Volleyball knee pads come in two varieties: bubble knee pads, which are thickly padded, and skinny knee pads for more advanced players. Skinny knee pads provide moderate protection and stays puts, unlike bubble pads.
* '''Shoes''': Volleyball shoes are designed to accommodate the amount on time players spend on the balls of their feet and their toes. The shoe's sole, mid-sole, and uppers, offer the wearer different areas of support and comfort while absorbing impact.
* '''Shorts''': There is a lot of movement during a volleyball game, so you need shorts that are fitted and usually made of Lycra or spandex. Loose shorts pose the risk of injury or snagging. The Adidas Adibody Short has 10 percent spandex and a feature called ClimaLite microfiber which allows air to flow easily. Tight shorts are worn by female players. Men's shorts have a bit more room for comfort.
* '''Ankle Supports''': If you have weak ankles, these guards will prevent the ankle from rolling.
Eye On The Ball
Now that you've got the gear you will need a volleyball. There are two factors to consider when buying a volleyball: Will the ball be used indoor or outdoor? Do you prefer leather volleyballs or synthetic composite balls? Indoor volleyballs weigh less than their outdoor counterparts and their panels are glued to the inner lining for a smoother look. Outdoor balls are sewn which prevents the ball from blowing away. As for the material, leather volleyballs are considered top quality and range in hardness. If you're a player who likes to hit the ball, then hard leather volleyballs will be perfect. Remember, it's all a matter of preference.
