You've conquered every piece of land on this earth, even Antarcticadespite those pesky penguins. Now it's time to explore the depths of the oceans. But before you can tackle a jGreat White or the ferocious angler fish, you need to suit up with the proper diving attire. You won't get very far without a pair of swim fins, so lets consider your options.
Choosing the Right Fins
There are many types and styles of fins and it's important to choose the right type of swim fin for the activity you are doing.
* There are two basic types of dive fins: full foot and open heel.
** '''Full foot dive fins''' have a closed heel and are typically worn barefoot. They are for warm water use only.
** '''Open heel dive fins''' have an adjustable strap in the back that goes around your heel. These must be worn with scuba booties, made out of neoprene. This is the most common type for recreational divers. Just make sure to carry an extra strap in case it breaks, which it will eventually.
* Next, you must choose a style of fin.
** '''Paddle fins''' are the most common type of fin and are good for shallow divers. They give you more surface area, while kicking, to propel yourself through the water. They are great for beginners and are generally inexpensive. Good quality paddle fins with have stabilizing rods on the side to propel your further.
** '''Split fins''' have a narrow split down the middle which helps to propel the diver forward as water moves through the slit. These are much more efficient than paddle fins, however, it is more difficult to back peddle or move around in enclosed areas.
** '''Force fins''' have a v-cut at the tip of the blade, similar to what a fish's tail looks like. The blade is turned up and is made out of polyurethane which is a very light material. It's main disadvantage is maneuverability, just like the split fins.
* If you do both snorkeling and diving, consider getting open heel fins since they are the most versatile. A full foot fin is going to be heavier which will make swimming more difficult so this may not be the best choice for deep sea diving.
* Before you go out and purchase $80 fins, consider how frequently you will be using them and for which activities. Look for quality and comfortable brands such as US Divers, Cressi, Mares, and Tusa.
* Always make sure you clean your fins properly after each dive to ensure their longevity.
