Diving Fins

By User:AllieCashel @timeAndDate(1277752771) Scuba diving and snorkeling allow us to see, first hand, the complex, beautiful and often misunderstood world that exists below the ocean's surface. It is an experience that the minority of the population is granted and will remember for the rest of their lives. Whether you are a regular, experienced, or a beginner diver, the time you spend in the ocean is precious and shouldn't be negatively impacted by any of the the tools and equipment you'll need to get down there. Your diving fins, the piece of equipment you depend on to propel you through the ocean, is no exception. Next time you go scuba diving or snorkeling, make sure you have a pair of diving fins that you feel comfortable in; hopefully so comfortable that you don't even notice them.

Fin Types and Styles

As the technology associated with diving has grown and expanded, so have the selection of diving fins. Take a look at some of these different types and styles to help find the one that is right for you. '''Full Foot Dive Fins''' - Full foot fins have a closed heel and are normally worn barefoot. Since you don't wear anything other than the fin, they are used solely for warm water diving. They are normally less expensive and a little bit smaller (making them easier to maneuver) than open heel dive fins, but since you don't wear any dive booties, its very easy to slip and fall with these fins when jumping off the boat. '''Open Heel Dive Fins''' - The other type of dive fin, these fins are always worn with neoprene booties and thus can be used in varying temperatures. They are more popular than full foot dive fins as they are easier to get in and out of but also tend to fit slightly awkwardly on your foot and are a little bit harder to maneuver in the water. If you decide you want this type of fin, make sure you buy your booties before the fins so that you can get the right fit! '''Paddle Fins''' - These are the most basic and common style of diving fins, are generally cheap, and are great for beginners. They work similarly to an oar, displacing the water as you kick and propelling you through. Although they are not the most efficient style of fin, they are easy to master and a perfect choice for the occasional, recreational diver. '''Split Fins''' - This style of dive fin has a slit down the middle which enables the fin to act like the propeller on a boat. Instead of pushing water behind you with these fins, you are propelled forward by lift as the water moves though the slit . Although they are slightly harder to master and maneuver than other styles, many divers enjoy the ease that they feel as they move through the water with these fins. '''Force Fins''' shaped cut at the end of the fin, resembling a fishes' tail. The fin itself turns up, away from the bottom of your foot and is made of polyurethane so it is very light. This style of fin is arguably the most efficient and it its known for its great acceleration speed. That being said, they are not as maneuverable as the standard fin and they are so lightweight that many divers need to use ankle weights to balance them out. For the most par, these fins have been very well received by the diving community, but are not a great fin for divers who are just starting out.

Sizing

Sizing for these fins is fairly simple, they normally are the same as your shoe size. Make sure you try a few pairs on before you buy however, because having a poorly sized dive fin could ruin your dive!
