Soccer
Soccer, also known as football to the rest of the globe, is the most popular sport in the world. It is played just about everywhere; from New York to St. Petersburg, people are lacing up their cleats and fastening their shinguards. Americans tend to be a little lax about the sport but abroad, soccer is a way of life. Whether you're a wee tot just learning or a seasoned player, our guides will get you prepared to win that World Cup.
The Kit
The kit, or uniform, for most soccer games is composed of cleats
,shinguards
, a jersey
,shorts
(or pants
), and long socks
that are pulled over the shinguards. Naturally your clothing will be in your team colors. Most are made out of polyster mesh, which won't trap heat and sweat. Professionals often have sponsor logos on their shirts. If you're looking for more clothing options, make sure you check out our guides on Boys', Girls', and Women's Soccer Apparel.
The goalies are required to wear their own distinct keeper uniforms so they are easily recognized by other players. They usually wear goalkeeping gloves
, as they are the only ones allowed to touch the ball with their hands. Other team members are allowed to wear gloves too, but it is not really necessary.
Equipment
After you get suited up, it's time to make sure you have all the proper gear. Of course you'll need a soccer ball
, but you also need a goal net
; there are both actual size nets and training nets
. Some other training equipment includes disc cones
,agility balls
, and passing arcs
. Don't forget to store all that gear in a duffle bag
or an equipment bag
.
The World Cup
The World Cup
, implemented by the Fédération Internationale de Football Association, or FIFA
, is the largest competition in soccer. Unlike most other sports competitions, the World Cup takes place every four years. The 2006 games took place in Germany and the last tournament, in 2010, was held in South Africa, where Spain took the victory. Interested in learning more about this worldwide phenomenon? You're in luck: biographies, DVDs
, and documentaries recounting the events of the previous World Cups are right at your fingertips.
