Soccer Equipment

Soccer is the most popular sport in the world. It is played just about everywhere; from New York to St. Petersburg, people are lacing up their cleats  and fastening their shinguards. 

The Kit

The kit, or uniform, for most soccer games is composed of cleats,  shinguards,  a jersey,  shorts,  and long socks  that are pulled over the shinguards.  Most players wear socks,  jerseys,  and shorts  in their team colors. The goalie is required to wear his/her own distinct keeper uniform  so they are easily recognized by other players. Goalies, or goalkeepers, usually wear goalkeeping gloves,  as they are the only players allowed to touch the ball in any way with their hands.

The World Cup

The World Cup is the largest competition in soccer. Unlike most other competitions in sports, the World Cup takes place every four years. The 2006 World Cup took place in Germany and the following tournament (in 2010) will be held in South Africa.  Interested in learning more about this world-wide phenomenon?
