Snow Skis vs Snowboards

You're ready to hit the slopes this wintercircles from your nose! However, you're done playing it safe with snow tubing. You want to take the next leap into something ''extreme''. Skiing and snowboarding are two of the most popular winter sports, and this guide will help you decide which is right for you.

Deep-Seated Rivalry

Before we get into the differences between these frosty activities, lets learn a little bit about the history, or rather, the longreserved for those who could afford country clubs and drink tea with their pinkies out. Snowboarding, on the other hand, appealed to a young, rebellious crowd, a crowd that skiers ''did not'' want at their resorts. Many resorts banned snowboarding, but the 1980s saw a huge surge in its popularity that couldn't be stopped. Picture your stereotypical skateboarder: baggy jeans, a backwards cap, and a bad attitude. This now became the stereotype of the snowboarder, bringing his ollies and his rail riding to the slopes. It's not hard to imagine why a feud began between the two sports. Both are guilty of trash talk. Ski resorts became a battleground and after the powdery snow-dust had settled, snowboarders claimed victory and were allowed to stay. It is because of these punk snowboarders that we now see skiers doing tricks and sliding rails. The clash of the classes has subdued, but friendly insults will never die out.

Pros and Cons

While skiing and snowboarding are both downhill sports (and lots of fun), there are numerous differences. The debate between which is better or easier is all a matter of opinion. (Although many do believe skiing is easier to learn.) Skiing seems to be something that anyone, independent of age or gender, can do; the demographics of snowboarders are mostly younger because of the increased level of physical exertion: you control the board with your body rather than with poles. In the end, you'll have to see which option appeals to you more, but here are some facts that can help make that decision easier for you. Remember: any time you are careening down a mountain at high speed, you are vulnerable to head injuries. Always wear a helmet! Check out our different options for snowboarding.
