Seasonal Foods

When certain foods are in season it means when foods are at its most ripe or have reached their peak. Seasonal foods  bought at the right time usually have a higher availability at the market, and are usually less expensive than when they are imported  when they are out of season. Foods also usually taste their best when they are in season.

Seasons

Autumn 

  • Fruits : apples, blackberries, blueberries, damsoms, fresh figs, grapes, pears, plums, raspberries
  • Vegetables : beetroot, broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, celery, cucumbers, eggplant, fennel, french beans, herbs, mushrooms, onions, parsnips, peppers, potatoes, pumpkin, radishes, red cabbage, squash, turnip, watercress, zucchini
  • Meat : deer, elk, moose, lamb
  • Seafood : mackerel, salmon, oysters

Winter 

  • Fruits : citrus fruit, cranberries, dates, pear, tangerine
  • Vegetables beetroot, cabbage, parsnip, pumpkin, red cabbage, shallot
  • Seafood : halibut, pacific cod, lobster, monkfish, mussels, stone crab

Spring 

  • Fruits : bananas, berries, figs, kiwi, mango,  pineapple, raspberries
  • Vegetables : artichoke, asparagus, carrots, cauliflower, celery, onion, parsley, radish, rhubarb, samphire, spinach, watercress
  • Seafood : pacific coast clams, oysters

Summer 

  • Fruits : apricots, blackberries, blueberries, cantaloupe, cherries, gooseberries, mangos, nectarines,  raspberries, rhubarb, strawberries, watermelons
  • Vegetables : basil, bell Pepper, borlotti bean, broccoli, celery, chanterelle mushrooms, cucumber,  eggplant, green beans, okra, peas, peppers, samphire, spinach, swiss chard, tomatoes
  • Seafood : soft shell crab, crayfish, radishes, sea bass, sea trout, sardines, clams, rainbow trout, unagi (Japanese eel)
