Saturday Morning Cartoons

Remember how you used to go to bed Friday nights wishing it was already the next day? One of the most fondly remembered rites of childhood is waking up early and rushing downstairs to settle in on the couch for a morning of Saturday cartoons. Starting in the 1950s  and continuing to this day, networks like ABC  and NBC , as well as cable channels like Nickelodeon  and Disney , air blocks of children's programming  that keep many a kid busy while Mom and Dad do household chores, make breakfast or enjoy a quiet moment together.  With catchy music  and playful opening titles, these are the shows that have defined (and defied) generations, so put on your coziest pair of pajamas, pour yourself a big bowl of sugary cereal and prepare to take a trip down memory lane. 

Classic Cartoons

These are some of the most beloved Saturday morning cartoons that have gone on to become television staples.

  • 'Lion-o, HO!' So goes the battlecry of the popular 1985 show Thundercats , which chronicled the adventures of a team of humanoid cats fighting evil in their adopted homeland. 
  • Another popular 1980s cartoon was Thundarr the Barbarian , which followed Thundarr  and his companions as they wandered a futuristic, devastated Earth and fought evil. 
  • The Jetsons  was a hugely successful 1960s cartoon that depicted a gleaming futuristic world and the lovable Jetson family that inhabited it.
  • The never-ending chase between Tom and Jerry  made this show one of Hanna-Barbera's most enduring cartoon couples, though some parents have protested the large amounts of comic violence. 
  • Batman Beyond  tells the story of Terry McGinniss, a new Batman who has all the gadgets, research and intuition he needs to fight crime and enemies in 2021 Gotham.
  • A cult children's classic in Britain, Mr. Benn  follows the adventures of a man who visits a Fancy Dress Shop and is magically transported to other worlds by the clothes he wears. 
  • Another favorite 1980s British cartoon was Charlie Chalk , the story of a friendly clown who finds himself on a magical tropical island surrounded by comic sidekicks and bananas.
