As I'm sure you already know, going horseback riding without a helmet is a bad idea and riding without a helmet you trust isn't a great one either. Whether you just ride for fun, for show, or for training, finding a helmet that is suitable for your needs, fits you properly, and will keep you safe can improve your daily riding experience. Stop worrying about damaging your show helmet, or squeezing into a helmet that's three sizes too small and consider using this guide to help you find the riding helmet that's right for you.
Every Day Riding Helmets
If you aren't looking to take your horse on a hog's back jump today (or maybe you are and just aren't showing), it's easy to find a riding helmet that is more comfortable and safer than the original show jump helmet style. Here are some tips to help you find a helmet that you'll love.
* Find helmets that have a removable headliner. Putting on a dirty helmet every day is never enjoyable, so look for a helmet with a liner you can wash whenever you feel the need.
* Look for dial fit helmets. A dial fit gives you the freedom to change your hair style or adjust the size of your helmet very easily. For a big family, a dial fit helmet is perfect for different children as you can adjust the size to fit everyone's needs.
* Check to see if the helmet has a ventilation system. Riding in the summer, a thick helmet can keep you at an uncomfortable temperature but a ventilated helmet can help to keep you cool and comfortable.
* Look into helmet sizing before you purchase one. Only some companies make youth sized helmets, while others won't make a helmet that will fit children. Most helmets are all sized by the SEI, making it easy to browse different brands once you've found your size, but some are not. Helmets can be expensive and it'd be a shame to buy one that doesn't fit correctly, so make sure you know about brand sizing before you buy your new helmet.
* Make sure you're safe! Almost all main stream helmet companies have their helmets approved and certified by the SEI, a seal of approval that proves a helmet will protect you during a fall. If a helmet does not have this seal, try to find one that doesyou can never be too safe.
* Many companies are making casual helmets out of plastic, which are very comfortable and light weight: perfect for riding in the summer or out on a hack!
Competition Riding Helmets
At every competition, it's important to make sure that you have a helmet that adheres to Equestrian style regulations while also keeping you safe and comfortable enough to perform well. Most companies are making English styled show helmets with many of the same amenities as the more causal helmets. So, when shopping for your competition helmet, look for the removable liners, dial fits, safety seals, and ventilation systems popular in the every day helmets. Remember, traditional competition English helmets are made in a hunt style, covered in navy blue, black, or brown velvet. Many competitions still require you to have a helmet of that style so check with you're competition to see if you need a velvet helmet before you buy a different style. Some popular competition helmet brands include Troxel, Olympian, and International.
