Vivid Pictures

Vivid was not only the first adult studio to start releasing titles on the DVD format (with Bobby Sox  in 1997), but they continue to be one of the leaders in producing movies with a couples-theme to them.

While space doesn’t allow us to list all of the Vivid releases that would appeal to couples, one of the more popular early releases by the studio include Ancient Secrets of the Kama Sutra , a title that stars Dyanna Lauren as a married woman who starts to explore her sexuality with her husband.

Also in 2001, Vivid released Fade To Black  on disc, starring Taylor Hayes as the girlfriend of a porn director who decides to use her in his movies -- hoping her on-camera skills will get him a shot at the “big time” in Pornoland.

Current stars Briana Banks and Ava Vincent teamed up with classic talent Sharon Kane and Rebecca Bardoux for Heart Breaker , the story of one sexual twisted family where everyone seems to be having an affair with everyone else.

Another release from Vivid that should appeal to both women and men include Debbie Does Dallas: The Revenge,  the newest chapter of the Debbie Does Dallas saga, with Vivid Girl Sunrise Adams in the lead role. Also worth checking out are the AVN Award-Winning Heart of Darkness,  which also stars Sunrise Adams; and Sessions , a feature starring Briana Banks that delves into one woman’s sexual therapy.

Wicked Pictures

While Vivid may be the more recognizable name for “newbies” testing the waters of porn viewing, when it comes to high quality adult features for couples, Wicked may be the leader of the pack. Almost always featuring high production values, lots of bonus material for the DVD fan, and beautiful women - Wicked movies are about the closest the adult industry has come to producing films that come close to what we see in the mainstream.

Wicked also had the advantage of getting into the DVD business right when they had the hottest woman in porn, Jenna Jameson, still under contract. The release of Dream Quest almost immediately established Wicked Pictures as a power to be dealt with in the adult digital realm, and this fantasy movie is still one of the all-time best sellers.

Wicked is one of those studios that seems to concentrate almost exclusively on couples-themed adult features, and some of the best titles they have released on DVD over the years include  Flashpoint, Double Feature!, The Gate  and Euphoria .

Wicked proved that it wasn’t afraid of being controversial with Falling From Grace , a movie in which a young priest finds his vow of celibacy tempted by a sultry vixen from his past. In Kink , Wicked turned to the dark side, having it’s lead character (Devinn Lane) hunt for an elusive serial killer.

Wicked also proved that adult film could be as funny as it is erotic with the comedic releases of Hercules  and Space Nuts , two titles that got a double-disc special treatment in the DVD format. In 2004, Wicked Pictures’ Beautiful  captured the AVN Award for Best Video with a film noir retelling of the Snow White fairy tale.

Private

Couples who have graduated from the world of Vivid and Wicked and are ready for something a little more “harder” may want to check out the DVD releases from Private. A foreign-based studio that traditionally has released European-made (usually dubbed) adult features with sexy overseas starlets, in the past year or two Private has brought more and more American talent into their fold. Although the action tends to be more hardcore in a Private movie than in a Vivid or Wicked release (more anal, more multi-partner couplings, a tad more “kink”), the stories actually lean a little more to the erotic and passionate than those released by American-based adult studios.

Some of Private’s early DVD releases that couples may enjoy include the multi-part Pyramid  series, Kruger Park and the three-part The Tower .

In 2002, Private released what has been reported as the most expensive adult movie ever made with The Private Gladiator , a three-part epic tale (available in single editions or a special three-pack) based on a certain Oscar-award winning film of a similar name.

In 2003, Private shot their first film ever in Scotland, using the country’s lush locales to enhance The Scottish Loveknot , which is available in both bare bones and special edition versions.

For many years, Adam & Eve has been king of the adult mail-order catalog - and their couples-geared company has been producing a number of fine flicks, as well. In 2003, Adam & Eve produced the big-budget Rawhide , an old-fashioned Western with plenty of romance for the female viewers out there.

Simon Wolf, a studio that used to release their features under the Adam & Eve label, went solo a few years back and started to distribute their own movies.
