Aquariums and Fishbowls

Fish make great pets for apartments, allergy ridden families and, of course, those who enjoy the regular aquatic adventure. These pets are relatively simple to keep, appropriate for families with small children and won't prompt neighborly complaints. That said, your fish won't fend off any potential home invaders; however, they will add color to your home and brighten dark corners or empty wall spaces. Now, before you invest in your new additions, remember to assemble the proper necessities to create their perfect habitat.

Tanks and Bowls

As far as aquarium tanks and fish bowls are concerned, the scale ranges from extremely simple to the seemingly complex. For fish such as a single goldfish or a solo Betta, a small fishbowl or aquarium will suffice. Keep in mind that two male Bettas cannot exist in the same tank and they often do not associate well with other fish; researching the aggression levels of your potential fish will help greatly in the long run. These one-fish homes generally lack filtration systems and require constant upkeep in order to clean the tank of any debris. For larger aquariums, sizes range from about 10 gallons to an extremely large 180 gallon tank. These larger additions will require a filtration system and will have ample space for rocks, plants and the accessories to build an aquatic paradise.

In-Tank Additions

An aquarium isn't simply the place in which your fish live, it's the environment which they require. In addition to adding a pirate ship for ambiance and a giant skull for a spooky effect, other additions will actually benefit the health and well being of your pet fish. A filtration system will remove water impurities and maintain clear water while a thermometer will allow you to maintain the proper water temperature. Also, while many plants are plastic, live plants can be added to the aquarium for additional oxygen and nutrients to help your pets thrive. Finally, while preparing for your new additions, make sure to understand the differences between fresh water and salt water habitats and properly create the ideal world for your fishes to swim.
